Critic Reviews for Marvel's Luke Cage Season 1

All Critics (72) | Top Critics (25)

There are excellent performances, lots of engaging references and the odd good scene or line, but overall it lacks substance, reality and grit.

Jul 3, 2019 | Full Review…

Sluggish story compared with Daredevil and Jessica Jones, but Colter and cast are first-rate.

If people take to Luke Cage it will be for the cast.

...a bold, strutting, confident slice of street heroism and urban culture...

Sep 19, 2016 | Full Review…

One of Luke Cage's greatest triumphs is its use of music, which resonates more prominently and energetically than in any previous Marvel screen property.

Daredevil boasted the best fight choreography of any live-action superhero adaptation in history, so Luke's got a tough act to follow, but this bodes well. The whole thing does, really.

Sep 30, 2016 | Full Review…

And yet, there's still so much of Luke Cage that feels like half measures... from the underwhelming antagonists, to the ridiculously inept pacing... and the creeping feeling that this show was built to fit into the mold of other Marvel shows.

Feb 11, 2020 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Every so often, Cage expresses ambivalence about violence, or wonders whether the collateral damage of his war with Stokes is worth it. These are reasonable questions, but the series reflexively and repeatedly dismisses them.

Sep 16, 2019 | Full Review…

As a character, Luke Cage may have indestructible skin and a rock-solid frame, but as a show, Luke Cage has those very same characteristics.

Oct 31, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

It can be a tough act to balance, and seeing him navigate those treacherous waters is what makes Marvel's Luke Cage a great fixture to follow, even more so for its progressive and inclusive nature.

Aug 28, 2018 | Full Review…

Everything about the show is nothing short of extraordinary.

Aug 25, 2018 | Full Review…

I honestly can think of no TV show that has given as much room, as much attention, as much love to black women as Luke Cage.

Absolutely Awful I could Barley Make it Past The First Episode I'll Never understand the Appeal

The cast, particularly Mahershala Ali, shine. Slow paced on occasion but I can appreciate they're building story and I thought it was a very meaningful series. Their attention to black actors and talent is phenomenal, compared to other shows.

So. At first, why do they always make characters leave the show, that are the reason, that the show is watchable? For me, Mahershala Ali was the reason i kept going. But after he left, it got worse and worse. I hate, that a plot, that could be three or four episodes is stretched to thirteen (!) episodes. Thats in my opinion unacceptable and just bad writing.

Never heard of Luke Cage before this series! But I'm a fan now! Good TV.

Overall pleased with the 1st season...The casting stands out for me in this series as Luke Cage is portrayed very well as is black Mariah, shades and Diamondback all worthy villains...Cottonmouth stood out for me tho a very interesting watchable villain who was portrayed brilliantly...Series began to drag towards the end tho and I feel as tho they tried to cram too much into it...I feel it would have been better as 10 episodes...However its left me wanting to watch Season 2 so I'm glad I watched it

This show is absolutely awful. I love Marvel and all of the other TV shows, so I wanted to love this one as well, but it is just so unbearably slow-paced and dull that I just couldn't bring myself to suffer through it. I really wish I could, but this one is just too disappointing. It's unfortunate that I'll be missing out on a part of Marvel, but I really have to go with the lesser of the two evils here. I really can't possibly comprehend how there are positive reviews on this, much less how it's rated "Fresh". It's beyond me.

Sometimes movies/tv shows surprise me by throwing a meaningless superhero name at my face and catching me off-guard with an excellent experience. Luke Cage did not.
  • Feb 07, 2020
It fails to tell a cohessive, interesting story, its dialogues are abhorrent, and acting pales in comparison even with cable TV shows. Luke Cage is a failure.
  • Jan 15, 2020
I watched it because I lover their chemistry with Jessica Jones. Isnt odd that Im more drawn to villain's character especially to Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes portrayed by Mahershala Ali ( which I'm so excited for his portrayal as the new Marvel's Blade ). Too bad his character was killed too early by his cousin, Black Mariah who took in-charge of all of Cottonmouth's dirty business left. I also love how Shades, played by Theo Rossi, manipulate the Black Mariah and Cottonmouth. Too bad that the Netflix X Marvel Original Series was cancelled. Well, I really hope that Disney+ will plan to reboot it after that condition where they cant reboot them to for a certain time.

Mile Colter's Luke Cage is a fun character with more depth than I thought he would get. The first half of the show is made amazing by the villain, but unfortunatly drops qaulity in the second half. The show obviously had a big budget, as the camera work, and the lighting, were great throughout the season.
