July 11, 2018
This show feels like a parody of superhero shows, but somehow it still wants to be taken seriously.

The title tells you everything you need to know about how bad this show is.

No one was ever going to be able to take a show called Manimal seriously.

Manimal, the mother of all "what-were-they-thinking?" series.

Woeful. But you can tell that from the title, right?

The show was by all accounts terrible...but it's garnered something of a cult following owing to its sheer campy ridiculousness.

This show lasted barely three months on NBC's schedule in the fall of 1983, but its impact can still be felt on TV to this day. Well, OK, that's not true.

For anyone over ten, it was a laughable bunch of balls starring Simon MacCorkindale...We still have nightmares about his bulging hand.

Special effects guru Stan Winston (who also brought Terminator, Predator and the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park to life) did the transformation effects for Manimal, which were only occasionally accidentally horrifying.

Despite the idiocy of its core concept, Manimal is actually surprisingly good fun.

Yet despite - actually, because of - a cheese factor that would worry anyone with lactose intolerance, it's become a cult favourite.

Manimal wasn't funny enough to capitalize on the inherent kitsch factor of the title premise, and not good enough in any other respect to get beyond it.

Manimal was campy...and developed a cult following even as it became a punchline.

The show's legacy is that it's one of the worst things to ever hit the small screen but viewing it now...it's not so bad. Really.

For what it is -- and what it is it probably should not be--Manimal is fairly well done, not so childish that an adult couldn't tolerate it during a weak hour, and even produced with a twinge, just a pinch, just an eencey-weencey trace, of wit.
