In 2010, History's 12-hour series "America the Story of Us" illustrated how technology advanced human progress throughout American history. This follow-up series takes it a step further by expanding beyond America and taking a look at how technology has evolved throughout the world. The series covers key events that were turning points in the human journey in transitioning from being hunter-gatherers to global citizens, including how people's lives in one part of the world are affected by events elsewhere. Among the topics covered are surviving the Ice Age, discovering farming techniques, the invention of movable type, creating the Industrial Revolution and exploring space. Actor Josh Brolin narrates.

Mankind: The Story of All of Us isn't a perfect documentary, or perfect television. But the History Channel deserves applause for every nod to the subject that gave the channel its name. Go to Full Review

It aims for epic, and sometimes hits epic -- but it's a bit shallow. Go to Full Review

The series offers up fun visual effects, from computer-generated images to well-crafted re-enactments, all at a dizzying pace. Go to Full Review

It's a cagey way to avoid the inevitable protests from some quarters who would quibble with evolutionary science... Regardless, there's enough here to keep you engrossed. Go to Full Review

Mankind is a visual banquet, though. And even grade schoolers surely won't be bored by its cavalcade of battle scenes, some of which almost seem like video games. In other words, it's classroom ready. Go to Full Review

Madeleine S May 27 Well done cinematically, but nauseatingly made through a male perspective. Dudes. Everywhere. Hi, women? We birth you? Would love some ladies in this show without being portrayed in relation to men. See more 11/27/2020 Full disclosure: I have not finished the first episode yet. What drives someone to write a negative review halfway through the first episode? Yeah, We've just exploded out of sub-Saharan Africa and straight through the Middle East to land in Western Europe. Through this accelerated journey, the guys on the screen get lighter in complexion — yeah, mostly all guys for the first several hundred-thousand years except one female doing female things, i.e.: having a baby. Oh wait, and then they mention the technology of creating clothing, so there's some more Stone Age babes sewing. Then another gal discovers farming. So it is not all guys, but mostly. And that's not just on the screen, but also in the panel of commentators. Of the 16 commentators, only Dr. Henry Louis Gates breaks the color barrier, there is one bro from the Middle East and a couple of women. So they reserve 75% of commentary on "The History of All of Us" for white males of Western European extraction. My objection is that the sub-text reads really clearly: Males make history and the whiter they get, the more sophisticated they get. Now the I've panned the show I have to watch more of it. I'll stop back and update if it gets any more inclusive, but I wouldn't hold your breath. See more Read all reviews
