Like the mother show, it is beautiful to look at, pleasingly slow, quietly menacing, culturally conscious and comes laced with the visual sensibility of a US western. Go to Full Review

It makes for another engrossing chapter in this saga of Outback-noir that has been of a consistently high quality and hasn't disappointed in its near-decade of existence. Go to Full Review

Every character is skilfully drawn and the writing and dialogue [are] tight, even spare at times; there’s no gratuitous exposition. Go to Full Review

A slow burn, but one that’s worth it given the rich world writer/director Dylan River and his staff have created around the younger version of Jay Swan. Go to Full Review

We often throw around terms like “outback noir” and “meat pie Western” when we’re trying to encapsulate this sort of thing, but perhaps we’d be better filing Mystery Road: Origin under Outback Greek Tragedy. Go to Full Review

Willhelm K @surmanvirta Mar 22 Nice atmosphere, decent acting. Got a bit out of hand with some of the things, but still recommended. Gotta catch up on season 2 asap! See more Paul D @LVHothead Oct 30 I liked this a lot, maybe better than Mystery Road. Good cast and outback atmosphere. Looking forward to season two. See more Nancy M @nmack 02/26/2023 Excellent series both seasons 1 and 2 and the Origin series. Excellent performances, interesting storylines, not at all predictable. Interesting and informative (not pedantic) look into aboriginal peoples culture and general Australian culture, issues, dynamics. Would really like more seasons of this. See more Andrew N @RT33528290 02/25/2023 Most episodes were slow and ordinary in build up; last episode was superb ending, pulling together all the different sub plots. See more don c @RT84333668 10/06/2022 Characters pop up unexplained with no context for their motivations or actions. Multiple unconnected narratives, with minimal character development. The protagonist is portrayed as emotionally stunted, not as someone conflicted. Script is supposed to be a slow burn, but is just slow. Ridiculous plot contrivances. See more Destroy - Erase - Improve S @Destroy-Erase-Improve 07/20/2022 My wife and I were very conflicted watching this show. It all came down to some really amazing actors in the lead rolls (especially Jay & Mary), enjoying seeing interpersonal relationships of major characters play out, but finally and sadly a really muddled story that was disjointed and poorly told. It all came together in the final episode, but the story as a whole felt very disjointed and had too many moving parts were not all particularly relevant and felt like filler. And to be honest the story was just not interesting. To highlight one issue I had... When the police break into a compound to steal back a cop car and just arrest everyone after they broke in without warrants I lost interest. Cops don't and can't do this and viewers know it... A story has to be grounded in it's worlds reality. Or what the point? Why not just stick fairy's and elves in there too? We LOVE the Mystery Road series. But after the absolute stellar first 2 movies and the incredible season 1, the last 2 seasons have seen writers turn Jay into an ultra brooding detective who just stares at people & makes stupid mistakes even for a detective. So the show became frustrating to watch. Why make a show centered around a character who is a great detective who misses things that even the audience can pick up on? The new actor is absolutely PERFECT as Jay. We looked at the screen in amazement as Mark Coles Smith brought a young Jay to life in every way possible. But Jay has not been the 'original' Jay we remember for 2 seasons now. And after seeing the amazing Aussie TV show Troppo this was a serious let down in comparison. See more Read all reviews
