Netflix chronicles the rise of the cocaine trade in Colombia and the gripping real-life stories of drug kingpins of the late '80s in this raw, gritty original series. Also detailed are the actions taken by law enforcement as they battle in the war on drugs, targeting notorious and powerful figures that include drug lord Pablo Escobar. As efforts are made to control cocaine, one of the world's most valuable commodities, the many entities involved -- legal, political, police, military and civilian -- find themselves in conflict.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Narcos lacks sympathetic characters, but pulls in the viewer with solid acting and a story that's fast-paced enough to distract from its familiar outline.

Narcos is shot through with a winning mixture of the tragic and comic. It's savagely funny when it looks at the contradiction at the heart of America's relationship with drugs. Go to Full Review

This single-story narrative is dangerous because it paints an incomplete and reductive picture of complex situations and people. Go to Full Review

The American plot, with middling American actors and a distracting voiceover, is a C. The Colombian plot -- with Brazilian actor Wagner Moura in a gorgeous performance as the grand, monstrous Escobar -- is an A. Go to Full Review

John S @SecRep Dec 26 I highly recommend this series. Even though they took some liberties with some of the facts this series is extremely informative and entertaining. The majority of the characters only speak spanish during the series so you have to read subtitles the understand what is being said. Still with that in play I was glued to the characters and the story. I have watched this series twice to make sure I didn't miss anything the first time. It helps me during the worst time of my life when my dopamine was so low I could only scroll my phone mindlessly. Now I have something I can be obsessed with, that my brain always gets excited when I think about it. This show will cure your ADHD symptoms for at least a day every time you finish an episode. See more Melisa L Nov 25 This series is disrespectful to Colombians because the actor playing the main character around whom the story revolves, Pablo Escobar, is not even Colombian. As a result, the acting is forced, especially the voices, and this is true of most of the characters who are not Colombian but are portrayed as such. The accents are awful and undermine the credibility of the series. It has not impressed me. See more Dave B. @DaveyBee Sep 1 Loved this show. The plot and the acting combined with the actual true story See more Gareth v @geewah Jul 23 Season 1 is a gripping, gritty dive into the rise of Pablo Escobar and the reign of terror he inflicted upon Columbia. The narration and real life footage is used to great effect and helps give it a documentary feel. Worth watching. See more Michael S. @Michaelshearatings Jul 9 The first season of “Narcos” kicks off the show by beginning the story of the rise and reign of Pablo Escobar, the infamous Colombian drug lord who built a vast cocaine empire. The season chronicles Escobar's journey from his early days in the cocaine trade to his eventual self-designed prison escape, setting the stage for his manhunt. It also depicts the efforts of American DEA agents, primarily Steve Murphy and Javier Pena, to bring him down. I thought the acting in this season was phenomenal, particularly by Wagner Moura. The man who plays Pablo Escobar. See more Read all reviews
