Critics Consensus

Shadowhunters boasts visual thrills and a potential-rich premise, but they're not enough to overcome the show's self-serious silliness and dull, convoluted plots.

Sure, this was just the pilot, but if first impressions can be trusted, this series is headed for the junkyard.

Wild start, but a good-looking one. Demands working knowledge of the books.

But, lordy, is it silly - and worse, it lacks the wit or sharp self-awareness to own up to its campiness or help make its melodramatic elements more palatable.

Every moment we're supposed to care, or worry about a character's fate, we're left cold because the characters are hollow.

Oct 3, 2019 | Full Review…

Shadowhunters has been an incomprehensible show, one that never offered enough to pull the uninitiated in. Maybe the show will find a better path in its second season, but I don't imagine there'll be many disillusioned viewers returning to find out.

Mar 21, 2019 | Full Review…

The series is trying to do far too much, too quickly in an effort to stand out. It's too bad then that it's having the opposite effect.

Mar 21, 2019 | Full Review…

"Shadowhunters" pilot, titled "The Mortal Cup," is not very good. It's egregiously clunky, confusing and frankly, for a wildly fanciful world seeped in Downworlders and half-angel, half-human demon hunters, lacks any magic whatsoever.

Mar 21, 2019 | Full Review…

[The Show] resolves one major facet of this season (Jocelyn's kidnapping/coma) and sets up next season and an altered group dynamic quite nicely, despite the fact that the central "twist" feels extremely derivative.

Unless your heart is literally made of limestone, it gets harder not to care about Clary, Simon, Alec, Magnus or even bloody Raphael.

Nov 20, 2017 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

All in all, Shadowhunters' first season had some brief high points and some very low points, while the majority of the latter can be additionally categorized as most of the character or plot development adapted from Clare's novels.

pretty good, interesting world with different species

This season is amazing and interesting, the only thing is that the graphics is a little bad (only in the first season), the 3rd season has the best graphics.... It gets more and more interesting season by season! I love this show!!

The lead girl is annoying. The role DOES NOT FIT HER.
  • Jul 20, 2020
I love the story but I'm really annoyed with clary's acting. so freaking annoying.
  • Jun 28, 2020
I watched 2 episodes of season 1, and I absolutely hate It. The acting was horrible, Clary was the most green, annoying, cringey person on the show that made me want to punch her in the face. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, because after the second episode I wanted to burn my eye's.

The plot to this series sounded good, but the actual season was really hard to get through! Katherine McNamara's (Clary) acting was really green, over exaggerated with her acting to the point of annoyance. I didn't feel any sympathy for Clary because of all her whining and pity acting. There were lots of petty quarrels between characters, that were taking away from the actual plot and too redundant. I don't know if I want to put in the time to watch the second season of Shadowhunters.

I never read the books but the concept fascinated me so I really wanted to like this. I am very good at suspending my disbelief and giving shows a chance, but I just couldn't do it with this. I forced myself to sit through the first episode and made it halfway through the second but then had to turn it off. The dialogue is dripping with cheese and the acting, aside from a couple of characters, is woeful. The main actress - the kind of character that I would normally love - speaks her lines like she's just reading them off the page, with no attempt to inject any kind of dramatic timing or personality into it at all. It all just combines into something completely cliched and, like others have pointed out, all that could possibly be forgiven were it not for the fact that the show also takes itself far too seriously. TL/DR: This show is very much like Twilight - great for early adolescent girls and grown women who are able to overlook the cheese. Everyone else would be wise to steer clear.

unimaginably shitty. This movie should not be shown on Netflix, it rots the network. The first few scenes of the movie were good though, at least I thought it was good so I tried to keep watching the movie but the further it got, the more disappointed I was. I can't believe I wasted 4 hours of my life watching that film

Everyone on here is beautiful and gorgeous and everything but Clarie is freaking annoying 95% of the time. Overall the acting is horrific but its a pretty cool story.
  • Feb 23, 2020
The first season does have some faults but most of just because of the budget they had to work with, but it is a must see!
