Their experiences are far from unique and that means their story might demonstrate to someone on the other end, watching wide-eyed or furtively, that a different life away from their particular cage is not just possible, but joyful. Go to Full Review

It’s really informative, and I am glad that they didn’t just focus on the Duggars and instead used them as a jumping-off point to talk to several others in the IBLP cult. Go to Full Review

Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets focuses largely on the Institute of Basic Life Principles and their disturbing beliefs, and deserves the strong audience it’s accumulated for that reason alone. Go to Full Review

Most viewers will come to this show with some knowledge of the family and its downfall, but Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets fascinates with the level of intimate detail the series manages to get. Go to Full Review

Janice M Oct 14 I think it was informative. As a Christian, I do not go along with their teaching. I think the men use it as a tool to abuse and dominate. Go by the Bible only. Our preacher says go to the Bible to prove his sermons. There is no man a head of the church, that's God's job. The scripture can be changed by men to mean what they want. Pray and read for yourself. God and the scripture is based on love. They seem to see evil in everything. God gave you a brain to use. It makes me sick that they abuse the women's bodies like they do. See more J M @jeffmarshallmovieblogger 01/17/2024 Just when I thought Jared from Subway was as bad as it could get, along comes this four-part documentary in which multiple individuals compete for his crown. Actually, the title is a bit misleading. True, a good chunk of this is dedicated to the creepy 21-member family who somehow won the hearts of TV viewers. But its also an indictment of a Christian organization called the Institute in Basic Life Principles. It's basically a cult whose beliefs harken back to the caveman. Its directions for raising children are particularly revolting. In reviewing the show itself, I have to admit I lost attention from time to time and even nodded off a couple times. (Although that's a regular occurrence since turning 50.) It gets a bit monotonous and repetitive from time to time. But it definitely deserves to be seen based on the audacity of the subject matter alone. There is one image I will never forget - a pastor brings a young boy in front of the congregation and pretends to repeatedly spank him and then force the boy to hug him while the people laugh with delight. It's stomach-churning. And as a once devoted church-goer who has developed a concern about organized religion in general, this documentary affected me on a number of different levels. Be warned: the description of Josh Duggar's child pornography habit is quite upsetting and almost impossible to comprehend. - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook) See more Karina U 11/04/2023 So munch new information! Very well put together and entertaining at the same time. See more Greg M @GregFromCos 09/13/2023 Seriously makes you question how this crowd has the temerity to say Drag Queens are the predators. See more Long L 09/06/2023 This documentary is extremely disturbing for many reasons, it shows how children were conceived and raised to be used for personal gain and how in order to do so their spirit was eroded to complete assassination in the name of "God", totally isolated from the real world, used for forced labor and the worst part of it that a TV network exploited the crimes in order to make money and glorified the pathetic farse, the latter are as guilty as the demented cult leader that created this very sad event. See more Rich S @RPS1963 07/17/2023 It's informative, but I can't understand anyone who lives in the same community with the Duggars actually saying they "like" the four-part series. It's a horror story and it's not over yet. See more Read all reviews
