The series did stumble a bit in trying to be unbiased and show all sides, but it rebounded once such thinking was abandoned in the third hour.

As a programme, Surviving R Kelly is deeply flawed. At best, it treads a fine line between attesting to the apparent pain of those taking part and exploiting it - and often gives in to temptation.

There are moments where they sit back and they say, but we do have to look at the full picture... just a reminder, there's more there... and I admire that.

It is an important and powerful watch, providing an opportunity for R. Kelly's alleged victims to share their horrific experiences of abuse.

Bit by bit the stories of the participants become spellbinding, as each word adds to a vivid portrait. In a way, it is a symphony; each voice is an instrument.

What Surviving R. Kelly does magnificently and somewhat extraordinarily is to center the experience of the women whose lives have been torn apart.
January 10, 2019
Surviving R. Kelly calls on music fans to consider how their support, while seemingly innocuous on an individual level, is one of the many threads upholding a predator's web-and how, in some cases, it can be the catalyst.

The series is comprehensively damning and powerfully disturbing.

We failed these women by thinking R. Kelly was just an envelope-pushing artist of vulgarity when he is in fact an unrepentant abuser, most often of children. Surviving R. Kelly doesn't let us forget it.

It is a staggering, stomach-churning narrative work -- especially for those who have experienced similar traumas.
January 7, 2019
Surviving R. Kelly is furious, punishing, and necessary, and its fury derives from how unnecessary it should be here in 2019, given "the 25 years of receipts we have against this person."

If you're still someone who's on the fence about Kelly, watch this documentary. After which, you won't want to do anything other than #MuteRKelly.

Surviving R. Kelly is all about making sure the women who have gone unheard get a chance to speak. It is brutal viewing. But it's so good to know it exists.

Smart, moving and deeply researched.

It's been too easy for too many to avert their eyes when the truth was staring back all along.

The series [presents] credible, firsthand accounts of years of alleged abuse against young girls and women by Kelly, a Chicago native.

Surviving R. Kelly revisits this history, but more importantly, it illuminates the faces and amplifies the voices of his many accusers.

Comprehensive and unflinching, Surviving R. Kelly forces us to finally hold Kelly - and ourselves - accountable once and for all.
