From the minds of "Saturday Night Live" veterans Seth Meyers and Michael Shoemaker comes "The Awesomes," an animated series about a team of superheroes. Well, not real superheroes, more like the second string. When Mr. Awesome, leader of the greatest superhero team in history, decides to retire, and most of the major players go with him, Awesome's son, Prock (short for Professor Doctor Awesome) steps up to field his own team of crime fighters. Prock's team includes Frantic, who is the third-fastest man on Earth; Gadget Gal, who's really an 85-year-old woman who looks 25, courtesy of a rejuvenation ray; and the Impresario, who uses a jewel in his turban to bring to life things he imagines (though his imagination is somewhat limited). Prock and his crew take on evil while trying to restore the team's name to its former glory.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Awesomes have a ragtag positivity and provide some super heroic wit, but this colorful spoof's gags and satire can feel just as slapdash as its low-budget animation.

Even when dealing with a spy agency or a collection of otherworldly abilities, petty disagreements, tiny slip-ups and wordplay seem to always win out and generate the heartiest laughs. Go to Full Review

"The Awesomes" is charming, but your enjoyment of it may depend on how much you may already feel over-saturated with animation. Go to Full Review

Given the talent, the jokes can be surprisingly creaky, but it's amiable enough. Go to Full Review

The Awesomes features some great nods to classic superhero storytelling, playing with tropes and cliches while balancing an overarching story over each season. Go to Full Review

The main problem with The Awesomes is that the series doesn't nearly live up to the amount of talent that are involved with the show. Go to Full Review

The Awesomes might not be truly awesome yet, and it very well could turn into a waste of time. But, in the argot of magic, it could also reveal itself to be an underestimated misdirection as The Awesomes' story unravels and takes shape. Go to Full Review
