The Boys is an expert deconstruction of superhero stories, with an appropriately wintery view of institutional power, be it corporate, governmental, religious, or caped.

Starr, Moriarty, and Shue bring extra dimensions to their characters, too, making "The Boys" all that much more fun (you know, when it's not very, very dark).

All of that said, the series is quite enjoyable, particularly in a fast and clever first episode.

The title may be the name of badasses tasked with taking these mega-human weapons of mass destruction down. What it's really referring to is its ideal demographic.

The show's best idea is its ultimate antagonist: The ceaseless working giant of corporate capitalism and the people who enable it. Those criminals are all too real, which is exactly The Boys' point.

Plenty of genuine laughs to be had amid the general drama, horror, violence, gore and pathos.

Never quite nails the joke, despite opportunities galore and a ton of gore.
August 23, 2019
The best part of The Boys is that all of its gory, uninching action-packed drama is packaged as a dark comedy. For as disturbing as the plot can get, there are always laughs - often twisted and sardonic - around the corner.

Part of what makes The Boys such compelling television is that it manages to be subversive without being reactionary.

Comics tend to lampshade, retcon, downplay, or explain away these questions. But with amplified character flaws, The Boys calls them back into question.

If...Chernobyl and Euphoria left you wanting more, maybe this eight-episode series will beckon you. [Full review in Spanish]

From the start they are telling a different interpretation of the source material and they are doing a damn good job of it.

It's just a nice balance of action, comedy, [and] serious business.

In spite of being one of the best TV shows about superheroes ever made, The Boys feels somewhat safe and dull compared to the twisted work of Garth Ennis. [Full review in Spanish]

Way past "Deadpool" in profanity, violence, sex, etc but so completely unique you cannot turn away. You will devour the first season and be hollering for the second. Jack Quaid scores again.

What makes The Boys next to impossible for me to enjoy in 2019 is its relentless, soul-deadening cynicism.
August 5, 2019
If for nothing else, I feel like The Boys is a great peek behind the curtain for a lot of the entertainment industry.

The Boys combines the intelligent use of ridiculing its heroes... with an absurd and ruthless violence. [Full Review in Spanish]

I don't remember any other series of superheroes of such quality.

A grave mirror of our own reality, but hopefully by series' end, it will be the stuff of pure, wish-fulfilling fiction.
