Critics Consensus

Though The Family's open ended-ness undermines its impact, it manages to craft a compelling picture of a shocking truth.

For all its unanswered questions and contradictions, The Family does paint a convincing portrait of a network of like-minded, self-congratulatory egotists working together to ensure they and only they get to call the shots. Go to Full Review
Jo Livingstone The New Republic 08/16/2019
It's the kind of story we're hungry for now, because The Family, like any good conspiracy theory, makes sense of what would otherwise be absurd, nonsensical. Go to Full Review

Moss leaves a lot of this open to interpretation, but the result is a project that can feel like an information dump more often than a film. Go to Full Review
Alejandro Lingenti La Nación (Argentina) 10/21/2019
The series loses its power because there seems to be a lack of judgment when it comes to summarizing it and organizing it around a more solid, clear, and convincing story. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

You end up unable to dismiss the possibility the Family may have had a hand in creating the documentary: stepping out of the shadows for once just to puff themselves up, and state, loudly and explicitly, that they're not going anywhere. Go to Full Review

A good example not only of the life of the organization but also of the power of US religious conservatism. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Brian S @Surname 08/22/2022 There is a lesson to be learned here about mixing politics and religion, especially exporting it to other countries. Of course, the white religuous crowd on Netlfix probably approves of this, hence the low score. The most interesting thing is when they asked why there are no black people in this religious political organization since you have to be invited, of course, they had no good answer. See more 05/21/2021 This movie is again one sided multiple snippets of President Trump at NPB. Even though President Obama was also there. Its one sided and needs to be more open to showing all sides. See more Andre T 09/17/2020 A rambling, slow and incoherent collection of anecdotes, memoirs and gossip aimed primarily at painting a group of Christians in a bad light, but with little substantive evidence or conclusion. Episode 1 for example sees two Washington housewives speculating on whether 'the family' keeps a map identifying those in the neighbourhood who are friendly. Simply, this series tries too hard to build conspiracy where there is none. The sparse content of this series could easily have been covered within a single hour. See more 04/24/2020 While the documentary itself does not necessarily pass judgment on the Family, it provides you enough information to gain insight into right-wing politicians who try to manipulate and use others through inconsistent, supernatural, unprovable, religious claims. Truly disgusting. See more 01/28/2020 Jumped around too much to be coherant. Typical politicians, lots of talking but not really saying anything. I would be interested in seeing a documentary about this subject, provided it was presented in a fashion that wasn't just info dumping with none of it making any sense. It is like reading a book where several pages have been removed. See more Read all reviews
