Twelve amateur bakers compete against each other to win the title of Greatest British Baker. Each round sees an aspiring baker eliminated, until finally the winner is selected from the remaining contestants. Their skills on baking essentials like cakes, breads, pastries and desserts are tested in each round, and the difficulty increases as the competition unfolds. The judges are set to taste all the goods created carefully by the contestants, and the audience is able to follow all the trials and tribulations with a wholesome twist.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The custard begins to curdle as The Great British Bake Off's lovable frivolity is weighed down by cultural blindspots and recycled gimmicks -- but it's still overall a treat.

Bake Off is now a mess of toddler-in-the-kitchen proportions. Go to Full Review

Every season's contestants are the binder holding this show together, but Sandro Farmhouse, Abdul Rehman Sharif and Syabira Yusoff kept us loyally engaged through these 10 episodes. Go to Full Review

Even thirteen seasons in, the formula hasn’t curdled; indeed, there’s something comforting in its consistency. Bake-Off remains as wholesome as a wholegrain loaf, and as defiantly cheesy as a cheddar scone. Go to Full Review

Things have been on the turn for a while now, and this year’s season was easily the show’s worst. Things just feel off now. What used to feel so effortlessly appealing is now trying hard to reinvent the wheel. Go to Full Review

It’s not that the judges should’ve known better; it’s that they didn’t apply the Socratic principle to realize their known unknown: Cordon Bleu and haute cuisine is not a good framework to understand cuisines like Mexico’s. Go to Full Review

Bake Off has made a virtue of predictability. The judges are the same, the competition is the same, even the competitors are pretty much the same. Go to Full Review

Renee N @RT43818304 11/26/2022 This latest season of GBBS left me feeling rather hollow inside. It was like they took out all the butter and replaced it with margarine, homemade butter cream for cheap fondant, personally designed molds for silicone molds from Target...oh wait, they did two out of that three. They lifted some rules--like making contestants make their own molds and fondant--which lead to extreme amateurs showing their unsophisticated colors. This year you'll find tacky shapes with no finesse throughout the entire season. The show stopper finales would have been heavily critiqued and booted mid-way through any other previous season. Let's just say Prue and Paul tried to convince us that burnt cake in the finale wasn't so bad. While I agree the winner was one of the best bakers, they did remove two contestants who were clear contenders and push two mediocre bakers into the final for what seemed like no reason. Perhaps they booted them for shock value? The two comedians aren't funny. Nothing worse than a comedian that only knows how to be annoying. They took out the magic of the show and it breaks my heart. I'm not a producer or filmmaker, but I rewatch the entirety of the series every year. I start with the earliest episode I can find and work my way back up to the most recent season (usually ending on the newest)--yes, I know I have no life. Anyway, the difference between the last couple of seasons compared with the rest are stark. It's like they took the Beatles and reduced them down to N-Sync. Some people like that kind of thing, but once I get used to quality it's hard to let it go. Next year may be the first year I don't watch the new season. Goodbye, GBBS. It was nice knowing you. Some recourse: you can't get old episodes with Mary Barry and the funny Comedians of GBBS most places, but you can on ROKU television. See more Read all reviews
