Definitely deserves a watch, even by people who have not read the original. On the other hand, the differences in quality and the heaviness of the episodes prevent it from being binge worthy, while the sense that the creators tried too hard is evident Go to Full Review

This anime stands out for its bold reinterpretation of classic fairy tales, infusing them with dark and mature themes. Go to Full Review

There are few bells and whistles when it comes to the Grimm brothers’ introductions to each story or their involvement, but the animated versions of the stories come to life in bright, eye-popping color. Go to Full Review

'The Grimm Variations' is extremely entertaining and knows how to put its spin on many stories that we thought were already worn out. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The power of the collection is in the more nuanced changes rather than the big wholesale departures. It isn’t just a case of Cinderella is evil, but more how Cinderella’s typical role is contorted by new circumstances. Go to Full Review

Gramont D @RT85980697 03/23/2025 It's almost a perfect anime. It only fails in small details. See more Ash P @AshParth 10/22/2024 One of the early releases of this year which at first, I thought this was interesting as a different variation of the Brothers Grimms classic tales into anime form like Disney does to theirs and since I've seen each episode, I'm pretty mixed with this series. First, I'll share my thoughts of each episode before I share my overall thoughts of the whole. First, we have Cinderella, which is a pretty damn good role reversal for the main girl herself for being a manipulator and even a killer. Granted, this year, we also had a couple of bloody Cinderella movies, which one was actually good but the other, not so much. I do question the dolls purpose, though. Second, we have Little Red Riding Hood which I was confused at first, but I had to figure out that at the end of the day, whether the citizens live in high class or low class, everyone has that animalistic instinct when it comes to killing. Third episode, Hansel and Gretel, seems like a mixed bag for it being similar to The Promised Neverland but did enjoy the ending involving the kids. Everything else about the themes is a little weird, though. Fourth episode, The Elves and the Shoemaker is interesting for the Shoemaker being a writer and focusing on the struggles of such while the only elf not only delivers some savage lines, but also the word of advice for the Shoemaker's life choices. Fifth episode, Town Musicians of Bremen is honestly my third favorite due to the theme being wild western with the mix of the animals being human instead of animals like the classic tale was. I do wish that there might be a little more action given its runtime. Final episode, Pied Piper of Hamelin honestly confuses me but understood a little bit on the temptation part but for one young woman being the center of a creep and an outsider. But at the end of the day, when looking between each episode, each episode is a different variation of the classic tale that I appreciate this series to tackle. Beforehand, we see a brief appearance of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm along with their sister, Charlotte, that I thought it was okay as they're telling the story as shown. The animation is standard, but the visuals are stunning when you're looking at it from a different viewpoint of each tale being shown. That goes the same for when you see the visuals in that brief appearance of the brothers and sister before diving into their stories. You could say that not only the brothers are telling the story, but rather showing the colors and visuals of the story to their little sister. However, this show isn't as dark as I'd expect it, except for like the first two episodes being darker than the others afterward. Not to mention, the voice acting is even incredible, given their delivery. I grew up with these tales, and I do enjoy the variations of the Brothers Grimm stories. It's just that it doesn't grasp me one hundred percent as the best episodes, in my honest opinion, range from Cinderella, the Elves and the Shoemaker, and the Town Musicians of Bremen. I do say it's worth giving this a watch if you're a fan of the Brothers Grimm's tales, along with it being a different approach or being a casual anime viewer. I'm gonna give this six Kyoko acting yandere out of ten. 6/10. See more Ethan H @RT69420057 06/25/2024 Not really for me. I feel the changes took away from the themes of the original story. Way too much was put into shock factor versus character development. I think if the show creators has picked out one story and extended it out a season this would have worked a lot better. See more Zack P @RT33887946 05/19/2024 Absolutely great take on the classics. Absolutely fantastic. See more Jockecoca B @RT59703296 04/21/2024 after the first episode: I dont even understood what i was watching. See more Will W @RT93096103 04/20/2024 A fascinating series that's completely enthralling. See more Read all reviews
