What to Know

Critics Consensus

A slick and schematic adaptation of Stephen King's novel, The Institute won't keep everyone committed but still offers up enough intrigue to merit a tour.

2.5/5
Life at the facility, with its adolescent inmates and creepy adult scientists, is bleak, but the horror in this science-fiction drama mostly feels compact and cautious. There’s rarely a sense of the unhinged or genuinely otherworldly. Go to Full Review

The Institute might have made for some perfectly serviceable fun for the early-adolescent demographic. As things stand, it’s hardly fun at all. Go to Full Review

Despite all its flaws, The Institute is still enjoyable in its pulpy sensibility. With engaging twists and a strong teen cast, the result is an easygoing summertime horror fix that amounts to more than just MGM+'s answer to Stranger Things. Go to Full Review

It doesn’t take a telepath to know The institute needs two types of critics: those who are familiar with the source material, and those who aren’t. As part of the latter, I found it to be twisty, thrilling, and laden with lore worth exploring. Go to Full Review

2.5/5
It takes its time in building up to an enthralling finish, but because it comes so late, it ultimately unfolds into a desperate and dying whimper rather than what should be an elongated bang. Go to Full Review

The Institute is not as scary as From, a series that makes far better use of an ensemble cast dealing with supernatural mysteries. Go to Full Review

Rebecca M @McBecky Jan 30 I didn’t expect to enjoy this, but I binged it over 2 days. It’s not perfect by any means and needed a larger budget, but it’s very intriguing and the pace is perfect. Ben Barnes is also a very strong lead, as is the young boy playing Luke. I hear season 2 has been announced and I look forward to watching that too. See more Tamás V @vargatomi Jan 28 I liked the show, thought it was a bit mid, but mostly improved on the very mid and unfocused book. My major gripe with it was that it looked cheap, it could have done with a lot more pizazz on the sets, especially the labs and Back Half, that felt a lot more '90s TV than the book implied. See more LFAF T @LFAFSTYLE Jan 23 The series overall is fine, however, it’s a Stephen King story that would’ve benefited being a film rather than a television series. See more Uriel T @Uriel146 Jan 13 La serie la verdad me gusto, yo la verdad no leí el libro pero me pareció increíble la recomiendo See more Dominik G @Klampfradler Jan 12 Hands down the worst novel adaptation ever made. It has nothing to do with the original story, except names and the general idea were stolen from it. It leaves me incomparably puzzled how the writers manged to turn King's story about the emotional world of children, their empowerment, their friendship and caring natures and the heroic actions of Avery and Luke into this utterly adultist, sexist crap doing everything possible to bend the plot into a celebration of some police rescueing a clueless boy. Oh, of course all the kids were turned teenagers, because probably the authors were afraid they wouldn't get away with sexualising 1 year-olds like they do, and I guess dumb hormone-driven ruffians with a flat character are easier to digest by a dumb audience than the smart, emotional, vulnerable and complex young humans Stephen King created. If there ever is a season 2, it better have a different title. See more Vlad S @uladz Jan 8 Never seen worse casting. Acting is awful, not a single good actor here. Direction, sound and visual production, everything is at the level of a school level pet project. Jeez, I want my time back. Don't watch, it's utter cr@p show, not worth your time. Better watch The Outsider if you want something based King's work but actually good. See more Read all reviews
