See more J W @CommishJW Sep 9, 2026 With mysteries, there is a doctrine or concept called "fair play" -- that the reader should have a fair chance to solve the mystery before the grand reveal. In Episode 1 of Season 3 (mayor is murdered) it takes 5 minutes of explanation, with all 3 "detectives" taking turns fleshing out The Who/What/Where/How of the murder. The explanation takes that long, and is that involved, because the viewer was not provided with enough clues to deduce the culprit and method. The viewer shouldn’t have to worry that the author is going to pull this kind of trick out of their hat. Fair play means the reader is armed with the same information as the detectives when the detectives solve the crime. Fail! It's not particularly groundbreaking, but the characters are charming and I love that it doesn't take itself too seriously. I did not realise there was more than one series and the one I watched on the BBC was actually old. One of those occasions where you watch part two just to see if it can continue to be so awful. The premise is ridiculous. The acting is dreadful. It is all just so silly. Learning that this was from the same author as Death in Paradise (DIP) made some sense. I used to love DIP, but it has now become unbearable as the banality and odd characteristics are taken to the extreme. Father Brown is another example. This style of program seems to be becoming ever more present and I worry that a) the British actually like this b) the non-British think we are like this. I love the BBC and am very happy to pay the license fee, but if this is what we are to expect with reduced funding and more competition then I fear for their future.
