The Twilight Zone: Season 2 Reviews

April 19, 2021
As with most anthology series, the results are decidedly mixed. For one thing, the show does away with its social justice bent entirely at a time in which those stories would be most welcome.

Ultimately, this Twilight Zone suffers by comparison, because there is just so much to compare it with - Serling's still peerless original, Jordan Peele's movies, other sci-fi anthology series such as Black Mirror and now TZ's own first season.

Season 2 is satisfyingly spooky and twisted, with a wry sense of humor.

Season two takes a more nuanced approach to its examinations of the fragile dude ego, and the end results are more chilling.

[If] these episodes are to be taken as an indicator of the whole, The Twilight Zone season 2 is not worth a visit. [...] While we keep hoping for a brighter future for The Twilight Zone, it seems to be stuck in the past.

The Twilight Zone's second season is not quite as dramatic a makeover as needed. But it offers a more successful collection of stories overall and is indeed a noticeable improvement on the first.

It's an encouraging sign that The Twilight Zone's second season begins with an episode that's relatively simple, and highly watchable.

Still a decent reboot, but far too timid.

Judging from the handful of overlong episodes made available ahead of launch, the new Zone is still rather a mixed bag, though one brimming with imaginative pleasures and smart casting.

If the rest of Season 2 is as bold and original as its first three episodes, it's well on its path to eclipsing that uneven first season and potentially becoming a must-watch series of television.

Another weirdly entertaining set of stories in the tradition of its original predecessor.

CBS All Access' reboot of The Twilight Zone rarely beats the audience at the guessing games it poses, or when it does, the twist is so basic as to be barely worth scoffing at.

These episodes feel stronger written than Season 1, and if the editing tightens up like it did before, these new entries could be amazing. It'll be hard for any other episode to be better than "You Might Also Like," though, which is a pure masterpiece.

In a twist worthy of the show's creepy music, the original series speaks to the strange times through which we're living more directly and profoundly than the new one.

With the writing tighter and more focused, the show makes up for a lot of the previous season's shortcomings.

There's also a lot of potential for season two to reach the same highs that episodes like last season's "Replay" delivered. For now, though, season two is off to a mixed start.

It's a tough look that the new season's three episodes screened for critics in advance was also its safest and most conventional.

These episodes certainly feel more strongly written than Season 1, and if the editing tightens up like it did before, these new entries could be amazing.
