Watching Ellie: Season 2 (2003)

SEASON:

Season 2
Watching Ellie

Critics Consensus

Watching Ellie drastically alters its format to better resemble a conventional sitcom, but ditching the stylization only makes the lack of decent material for Louis-Dreyfus all the more apparent.

Critic Reviews for Watching Ellie Season 2

If Ellie possesses any attractive characteristics at all, the producers of "Watching Ellie" are keeping them well hidden. For that matter, they've also done a pretty thorough job of hiding the show's comedy.

It's back, and the results of an extensive overhaul are undeniable. It's not so stylish or energetic anymore, and it's still not particularly funny.

The very thing that some people liked about the show last season -- that it was different from the standard sitcom format -- is gone.

Either crassly insensitive or bold and daring in an anti-political-correctness way... Maybe Elaine, Ms. Louis-Dreyfus's character on ''Seinfeld,'' could have gotten away with some of this.

In what has to be one of the most difficult achievements in modern television history, NBC has managed to make Watching Ellie exponentially worse in this "new" version.

It's an in-your-face affair, and after a while, your face gets tired.

Time should be up for Julia Louis-Dreyfus' grating comedy, which has given up trying to use real time in keeping pace with a life-challenged lounge singer.

Ellie Riggs personifies the real, working-in-the-trenches artist who may or may not be all that talented and may or may not get a break -- just like in real life. If this isn't fodder for comedy, I don't know what is.

What began as a demonstration of good actors adventurously struggling with a badly written script has been revamped into a demonstration of good actors desperately struggling with a badly written script.

There's a stridency to Dreyfus's work that smacks of desperation. She seems to be laboring to turn a so-so show into the I Love Lucy of the 21st century.

The running-time element is gone, and it's videotaped with an audience. But one thing hasn't changed. It's not funny... The Seinfeld curse has struck again.
