Blessed with a twisty true story that needs little embellishment to intrigue, Welcome to Chippendales details the battle over a beefcake empire with stylistic verve.

As it slowly peels back the layers of its story over eight episodes, the show reveals itself to be a little more flabby, and a little less assured than what we were hoping to see. Go to Full Review

This creation story of a this stripping phenomenon has wider themes about the American Dream and how it can turn sour, as well as the devastating impact of toxic masculinity, long before the term was invented. Go to Full Review

The script is entertaining... But at times it’s having too much fun and feels superficial. Go to Full Review

The true story behind Somen “Steve” Banerjee and the beginnings of Chippendales is a scandalously shocking tale, and yet Welcome to Chippendales manages to be only scandalously trite and boring. Go to Full Review
Scarlett Harris She Knows 07/28/2023
By appropriating Dorothy Stratten’s tragically short life to aggrandize the first episode, and then discard her without a second thought by the next, Welcome to Chippendales is no better than the culture that did the same. Go to Full Review

Welcome to Chippendales turns the classic American immigrant story on its head with a glaring representation of the shadow sides of capitalism. Go to Full Review

Stephen C @bob25009 Jun 28 8 funny episodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more Dave C 10/06/2024 A thoroughly engaging, well-acted, and creatively directed series revealing the naughty, cheeky, sweaty, drug-addled history behind the epic phenomena. Loved it See more J M @jeffmarshallmovieblogger 01/18/2024 I had no intention of watching this. In fact, I wasn't even aware of its existence until a friend who is into true crime programs asked me if I would watch it and give my opinion. My intention was to watch an episode or two and give him some limited feedback. I ended up binging the whole eight episodes over a single weekend! This is a luridly fascinating tale of greed, sex and power - if I didn't know any better, I would have sworn this was another Ryan Murphy undertaking. It's deliciously over the top and often utterly compelling, led by a mesmerizing performance by Nanjiani who is miles away from the romance and comedy of THE BIG SICK. This could be a turning point in his career, and his performance here is a definite highlight. Each episode takes us further down the rabbit hole, and it would feel ridiculously implausible if it weren't true. I was so taken by the story that I watched a couple of documentaries afterwards. And for the most part, this feels very authentic. Like many a limited series, there are moments when it drags and probably could have been done in six episodes rather than eight. But for the vast majority, I was transfixed and transported. As long as you aren't expecting anything too highbrow, I think you'll have a wickedly good time. - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook) See more Gareth v @geewah 06/29/2023 Okay. If the screenplay had been fleshed out a bit more and we could see more about Banerjee's machinations it may have gone to the next level. See more omovies H 02/02/2023 "Welcome to Chippendales" is a thrilling and fun new series on Hulu that showcases the talents of an incredible cast. Kumail Nanjiani (also producing) delivers a standout performance as Somen "Steve" Banerjee, the founder of the legendary male dance troupe. He is joined by the always terrific Murray Bartlett (Armond in White Lotus season 1) as the group's cocaine-fueled artistic mastermind and choreographer, and the amazing Annaleigh Ashford as Irene Banerjee, Steve's wife and the accountant who helps keep the business running. The series is further elevated by the presence of the iconic Juliette Lewis as the group's quirky costume designer and idea woman. The show is a true triumph, capturing the spirit of the late 70s and early 80s with stunning accuracy and attention to detail. The talented cast brings the characters to life, making the series a must-watch for fans of great acting, period pieces, and dance. The storyline is fast-paced and engaging, capturing the rise of the Chippendales from a small Los Angeles club to a global phenomenon. The series is an entertaining and nostalgic trip back in time, and a testament to the power of great storytelling. Was a bit of a slog to make myself finish it. But thoroughly enjoyed the rag to riches beginning of the show. See more Read all reviews
