Jeff Stein is an American director, writer, and producer most famous for "The Kids Are Alright," his 1979 documentary on the British rock band the Who. Prior to the film, Stein had no show-business experience, and largely landed the job through sheer perseverance, ultimately getting the cooperation of the iconic group. The movie became a renowned rock document, and Stein went on to work in television, writing numerous episodes of the popular cop comedy series "Barney Miller." He also served as a producer on the '82 feature "It Came from Hollywood" (featuring Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, and other comedians), and, in '85, Stein became a key writer and producer on the hit sitcom "Mr. Belvedere," working as executive producer on the show's entire '85-90 run and penning more than 30 episodes of the series. Stein also directed the "Alice in Wonderland"-inspired video for Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More" and contributed to the concert film "The Who at Kilburn: 1977," which was released decades after the performance.
