Distinguished Scottish author Alistair MacLean wrote 29 successful novels, many of which were international best-sellers and were made into films, including The Guns of Navarone and Breakheart Pass. Before becoming a novelist, MacLean was in the Royal Navy and then worked as an English teacher. He became a writer after winning a short story contest. His first novel was H.M.S. Ulysses.
