Began his career as assistant art director on John Huston's "Moby Dick" (1956) and went on to work on eight subsequent films with the director, including "The Roots of Heaven" (1958), "The List of Adrian Messenger" (1963), "A Walk with Love and Death" (1969), and "The Dead" (1987). Grimes also worked with director Sydney Pollack on six films including "The Way We Were" (1973), "Three Days of the Condor" (1975), "Bobby Deerfield" (1977) and "Out of Africa" (1985), for which he won an Academy Award.
