      Movie Info

Former Broadway hoofer Paula McFadden (Marsha Mason) and her young daughter, Lucy (Quinn Cummings), are outraged to find that Paula's former lover has fled to Europe and subleased their apartment to hyper Chicago actor Elliot Garfield (Richard Dreyfuss). Neither Marsha nor Elliot is prepared to acknowledge the other's right to the apartment, but they reluctantly agree to share it. Despite their opposite natures and constant bickering, when Elliot's play fails, Marsha is surprisingly affected.

Not entirely my kettle of fish although I appreciate Dreyfuss and Mason's performances. I prefer other depictions of Broadway but this is nonetheless a well polished film.

A very beloved friend who unfortunately deleted her account after 7years from flixster recommend me this Movie as a goodbye. A very nice and clever recommendation. I m not a Richard Dreyfuss fan, but it quite took me by surprise. Very lovely Movie.

Parts of "The Goodbye Girl" feel a little contrived and there's almost no explanation for the unexpected romance that develops between the two protagonists, which makes their relationship feel awkward and paper thin, but the cast is so good and the screenplay is so funny and sweet that these issues become irrelevant. Richard Dreyfuss is excellent.

This is not your average love hate relationship. Dreyfuss deserved his Oscar, and everyone deserves to see this film.
