Esteben R @Cinemaniac452 1 day ago Unfortunately we live in a time where people don't know how to rate things based on their own merit. That's why most of these reviews are comparing this to the original that was made in the 80's, and because of that I don't think people are giving the movie a fair assessment. They're viewing it through a nostalgia filter. I chose to look at it as if the previous installments of Nightmare didn't exist and because of that I was genuinely terrified. The transitions from reality to dream sequence were great and the template for recent horror movies that blur the lines like the Smile franchise and most recently Backrooms. All in all, this movie deserved a sequel at least but was cut of it's potential by fickle horror fans and critics alike who don't know how to leave the past in the past and enjoy what's in from of them right now for what it is. Jackie Earle Haley did a good job playing Freddy Krueger, bringing his own take on the iconic horror villain. However, I wasn't a fan of the decision to make Freddy a child molester rather than simply a child murderer like in the original. Some of the creative choices and special effects also didn't quite work for me. Overall, I enjoyed this remake, even if it doesn't live up to the original. Jackie Earle Haley is a good Freddy Krueger. I definitely prefer Robert Englund, and I don’t love the decision to blow up the emphasis of Freddy being a child predator, but I can appreciate the attempt to do something darker and scarier with the character, and I think Haley does a good job with it. But in general, I just found this to be a weak, underwhelming remake. Visually it’s very tacky (I’ve never loved the color and lighting that these mid-to-late 2000s horror remakes always seem to adopt), it’s not as scary or frightening as it wants to be, and it just doesn’t hit the same as the original. It’s worse than that 1984 film in every way, and everything it tries to do differently, it fails, like diving into Freddy’s backstory, or again, overemphasizing his predatory nature. For every single 'Nightmare' film I could always rely on their creativity, energy and unique direction (nevermind the strength of their plots or logic) that made them more of an event than your average slasher fare. And I do mean ALL of them. But this 'Nightmare' represents the antithesis of not only the franchise's offerings on plot, but visual distinctness. Hearing Freddy give a dry speech on the wonders of biology without a grimy, gleeful smile or a fun little jab at a victim's insides made the whole thing rather depressing after a little while...
