See more Russ G @RT78760655 01/21/2025 Saw this at age 21 when it came out and thought it was good. So I checked it out 50 years later and found it unwatchable. I skipped through about half of it but didn't miss anything. It's variously labeled as a drama and a comedy; it doesn't work either way. Kristofferson stinks up everything he's in; he should have stuck to songwriting. The kid is annoying AF. The story is utterly disjointed; the intent may have been to make it "episodic" in a documentary style, but the lack of flow is unacceptable. Alice is weak and dumb; she gets involved with someone she doesn't know just weeks removed from widowhood? Are we supposed to accept "vulnerability" as the excuse? Continuity is bad in this, too; first she's in a motel then a shabby apartment with no connecting scenes. Alice's husband is killed on the job; don't tell me there wouldn't have been life insurance or a lawsuit against his employer so I don't get why she was reduced to desperation. No family, no savings, no home ownership after around 13 years of marriage? Were the 60's and 70's really that bad for functioning adults? Alice is raising a 13/14 year old son who's a complete idiot? Some good moviemaking here such as the staged truck accident which couldn't have been cheap to film, but that doesn't make it a believable story or a good film, even with a barely pubescent Jody Foster in it. They used this film as the basis for a later sitcom simply called "Alice" but that was entirely different; it was more like a precursor to something like "Cheers" focusing on just four characters from the diner.
