What do you do when you're seventeen, suicidal, and believe that the only thing the world has to offer you is violence and pain? You get in your car and drive across the United States to go see the Grateful Dead, of course. At least, that's what you do if you're lucky. And without a doubt, Lonnie Frazier was very lucky. In 1985, Lonnie's life was spiraling out of control. Through a twist of fate she found healing in an unexpected place: the Deadhead community. It all started with a road trip and free tickets to see the Grateful Dead at Red Rocks in Colorado. This film is an exploration of the Deadhead family, past and present, and the qualities that make it unique. We follow Lonnie as she reconnects with the women she traveled with in her youth, and makes new friends along the way. Through wide ranging interviews, she seeks to dispel the common stereotypes about Dead-heads and document the beauty of the community. We learn how the Grateful Dead touched the lives of so many people, the healing they found through the music, and the memories they cherish most. Twenty five years after the road trip that started it all, Lonnie returns to Red Rocks in her quest to complete this film. On this journey, she discovers healing, and the power to write her own story.

It's an admittedly sentimental love letter to Grateful Dead fans (also known as Deadheads) that doesn’t reveal anything groundbreaking. The movie tends to be repetitive, but it’s also uplifting and celebratory of people finding positive communities. Go to Full Review

A much better film when it's telling the director's personal story, than when it's exploring the much-trodden subject of Deadhead culture. Go to Full Review

06/14/2022 Really enjoyable and relatable film that explores an interesting American Subculture: Deadheads. Deadheads are super fans of the Grateful Dead. They created their own community and culture with their own set of rules and traditions. Box of Rain shows those of us who weren't part of that community what it was all about, and undoubtably will take Deadheads on an enjoyable trip down memory lane. The archival photos and footage really brought the scene to life. Especially when combined with the interviews! The filmmakers interviewed a whole range of people, from fans who only saw a few shows, to some very prominent Deadheads. The whole film is tied together with the story of how the director got involved with the Deadhead community in the early 1980s and how it changed her life. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who loves music, travel, and anyone who dances to the beat of their own drummer. Or in the case of the Grateful Dead, two drummers.
