A mostly fun 90s action movie that overstays its welcome just a bit, Con Air almost works great but ends up working pretty good. It's held back by a few dull moments, a needless final act, and a strangely sleepwalking Nic Cage. However, it's fueled by an otherwise all star cast, a great sense of humor, an unhinged John Malckovic, a pretty unique premise, and some great action set pieces strewn throughout. It's a fun movie, just not a perfect one.

The plot is completely absurd and some of the action sequences are a few minutes too long, but Nic Cage and the rest of the cast make this just a totally fun and enjoyable action movie.

The director's cut is for ages 18+ only (and longer), LOL!!!!!!!! Funny and original jokes by Dave Chappelle.

"Why couldn't you put the bunny back in the box?" Without doubt the greatest action movie ever made. Take all the action films you've ever seen, all the loser daddy daughter plots, stock action characters, gun fights, explosions etc… and distil it into one joyous, madly over the top, hilariously satirical celebration of violent mayhem and an All American hero's eternal struggle against the odds - armed only with an unwavering belief in the nuclear family, his bare fists (military trained lethal weapons) and a modest assortment of automatic weaponry. Add to that an absolute stellar cast and you've got a real gem. Plot: Cage is coming out of prison after years, unjustly sentenced for killing a man (who really deserved what he got) in self defence. Patiently serving his time in productive and reformative activities like learning to speak Spanish, complex origami and keeping ripped doing montages of press ups, pull ups and handstands. The years of waiting are finally over and his mission is now simple: he's to be united with his daughter on her birthday. A daughter he's never met. Daddy's coming home and he's bringing her a pink fluffy bunny. There's only one problem… The prison plane flying him home to his beloved family is full of the most psychopathically violent and notorious cons known to man. And they're about to hijack the plane. Cage is at his very best. Cusack is as always unique, playing a bookworm cop who uses big words (finally buddying up with Cage in the Las Vegas barn storming finale). Malkovich "Cyrus the Virus", who's father taught him nothing, likes to kill for fun, Buscemi, the worlds most dangerous serial killer, wore his victims head as a hat across three states. Rhames "The Dog" simply wants to retire to an extradition free sandy beach, killing as many pigs as he can on the way (for political reason). Lay over some great power rock, counterpointed with some gentle Spanish guitar melodies (for the more touching moments) and you've got the perfect action movie. Everything made since (all the MCU trash etc…) is a sad, mechanical footnote to this full blooded classic.

In spite of its huge budget and unbelievable action scenes, "Con Air" is shameful for conflating humor with murder, violence, serial killing, and child abuse. This is the cinematic equivalent of a sick video game. I was highly offended.

i do like this movie - it's a good watch - but Nic Cage just isn't your typical good-bad-guy character. this role is more of a Bruce Willis type & i just couldn't get over that aspect of it.
