Gordon has always been the best at adapting Lovecraft. This isn't the best of his adaptations, but it's still a solid Cult/Sea Creature flick. I just wish we did without some of the poor CGI.
The movie take you to a faithful Lovecraft ambience and dark atmosphere of the "lost people" , but fails with the sound and special effects, even for the time... It´s a nice Lovecratian movie and its mandatory for the fans
a true horror and lovecraftian classic that few people know. aside from a terrible few seconds of bad CGI, this movie was truly well made.
Was this movie (I am reluctant to actually call it a 'movie') a really bad cheesy low budget film or was it just the bad script, directing, acting, and photography, or both?!? Godden starts off as a buttugly, wimpy, nerdy, dweeb, spaz, and in a matter of hours morphs into an athletic, savvy, crafty, monster killer. In the storybook pictures the mermaid is well endowed & voluptuous. Blanco is plane Jane with the breasts of an adolescence male. A lot of just 'dumb' scenes, typical of most of today's horror films. e.g. Why would you ever dump the motor off of the dingy just because it didn't work?!? The story drags with Godden fleeing through the village from the monsters. F-bombs and biased anti-Christian propaganda are the normal fare for the garbage films produced around the world today. A little action at the end is also the standard receipt for present day horror movies, unnecessarily bloody & gory with nudity thrown in. A really sick movie, written & produced by sick minds, to be enjoyed by sick minds...
A movie I will remember for ever I'll watch it every 2 years reminds me of resident evil 4 somehow.
There is no setup and a lot of running around to point of it being comical. The movie stars discount Jason Lee who is a character you learn very little about. His biggest characteristic is probably his glasses. The ending throws in a couple twists last minute and immediately contradicting character motivation. Actually this reminded me of Resident Evil 4, so go play that instead. There are better Lovecraft films out there.
Typical B-movie fare. Cool creatures that aren't scary or that interesting. Looked like it had promise in the beginning before venturing off into B-movie territory.
A fun flick that does take a while to really get going, too bad the CG makes it look very dated. Especially fun to see for fans of Resident Evil 4.
Somehow Gordon captures his signature cheese, while providing a truly suspenseful, atmospheric, and sometimes brutal entry to his film career. As a hardcore Lovecraft fan, I also found this to be one of the best adaptations of his work. Some might complain that it lacks the humorous elements of Gordon's Reanimator, but I prefer a faithful adaptation with existential terror to a loose adaptation filled with comedic gore porn.
Despite an arguably fun premise, this movie is truly terrible. Some of the worst sound design you will ever encounter met by a paper thin story with awful execution. The story is carried by the "run away from the monster" approach that builds to a nihilistic, but unearned twist/conclusion.
