Despite its scientific liberties and heavy-handed melodrama, there is an earnestness to its scale that keeps me hooked every time the frost begins to creep across the screen. For me, the spectacle and high-stakes tension of seeing the world frozen over go right up there with the best of the genre from the 70s, capturing that same classic "disaster epic" spirit with a modern, icy twist. The characters as well are unique and well acted, even down to the homeless guy who sticks with the NY group. Not without some flaws of ridiculous natural events, possibility of surviving, and speed at which the events occur, but for a movie its nothing that kills it. What elevates the movie is the direction, which treats the outlandish premise with sincerity.
