Movie Info

Dead Man's Eyes was the third in Universal's "Inner Sanctum" series, designed to showcase the presumed versatility of star Lon Chaney Jr. This time, Chaney is cast as artist Dave Stuart, who is blinded by a corrosive acid. A radical new form of surgery will restore Stuart's eyesight-but only if another person is willing to donate his eyes. That other person turns out to a murdered doctor, so naturally Stuart is suspected of bumping off the medico for his own selfish gain. Only the real killer knows the truth-and isn't averse to committing a few more murders to keep the facts from coming out. Lon Chaney Jr. is overwrought as usual in the leading role, but at least he's consistently better than his material.

Dead Man's Eyes is one of the weaker entries in The Inner Sanctum series. The adjective "standard" is pretty much the best you can hope for here. The plot, the acting, everything. Reginald Le Borg's direction is kind of phoned in and doesn't really stand out like his previous entries did. The only thing that does stand out is Acquanetta's incredibly bad acting. I can't decide which was worse, her name or her performance. This woman couldn't deliver a line if she had a mailman behind her and she makes Sharon Stone look like Katharine Hepburn. If you've seen all the other Inner Sanctum movies you may as well watch this one, but Dead Man's Eyes is not the place to start.
