Movie Info

This film follows people on both sides of the drone technology. The unique access to drone victims in Waziristan is juxtaposed to drone pilots who struggle to come to terms with the new warfare. The film covers diverse and integral ground from the recruitment of young pilots at gaming conventions and the re-definition of "going to war", to the moral stance of engineers behind the technology, the world leaders giving the secret "greenlight" to engage in the biggest targeted killing program in history, and the people willing to stand up against the violations of civil liberties and fight for transparency, accountability and justice.

The film ranges far, wide and deep in its exploration of this distinctively 21st-century form of "dehumanized" combat.

"Drone" is a solid, thought-provoking documentary that raises some pertinent questions even if they may not originate from the most objective of places.

There are no suggested solutions here to the difficult issues raised, but the film at least reminds us that it's important not to accept this new way of warring without scrutinizing it.

Schei shows how, actually, the U.S. and its military-industrial complex treat war like a video game - to the point where finding gamers adept at video war is a legit recruiting tactic.

Make no mistake, the questions that Schei poses are important ones, and Drone is a sleekly produced documentary. But a failure to bring any new perspectives on the topic means that what should be required viewing, unfortunately, isn't.

It's hard to deny the film's ultimate goal of opening up a public discussion about how we wish to be defended by our governments.

Audience Reviews for Drone

½

Drones is an interesting thought piece on how drone warfare is politically expedient but perhaps not morally so. The focus on the potential for drones being used against the United States is a good warning but somehow the version of the film that I saw lacked subtitles and therefore the context provided by those who were victims of drone attacks was lost. More discussion with the drone operator who left his position would have made for a stronger film as well. We tend to observe him more than hearing from him in a lot of cases.
