When Joanna Drayton (Katharine Houghton), a free-thinking white woman, and black doctor John Prentice (Sidney Poitier) become engaged, they travel to San Francisco to meet her parents. Matt Drayton (Spencer Tracy) and his wife Christina (Katharine Hepburn) are wealthy liberals who must confront the latent racism the coming marriage arouses. Also attending the Draytons' dinner are Prentice's parents (Roy E. Glenn Sr., Beah Richards), who vehemently disapprove of the relationship.

Initially breezy without ever sacrificing any of its points, the picture eventually resorts to a series of static speeches. Luckily, the actors carry the day, particularly Sidney Poitier, Cecil Kellaway and, taking MVP honors, Spencer Tracy.

Kramer's film does feel like a dusty time capsule. Still, as a film starring some of cinemas greatest actors, the combination of Hepburn, Poitier, and Tracy is still enough to hold the film's artifice at bay -- mostly.

The movie was progressive for it's time, but not as much today. But the acting is still enjoyable. Every actor received an Oscar nod for their performance...except for the legendary Poitier lol

Houghton was not a good cast for Joey. Her acting is simply not believable with all her forced excitement and enthusiasm. They should have cast Sally Field who was virtually the same age as Houghton and already had a lot of experience acting, which Houghton obviously had not. Sidney Poitier, Catherine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy were fantastic. You can’t beat their acting abilities. The scenes these three or any two of these three had together without Houghton present were very rich to watch.

I'm thinking it's too brief, too tightly spaced to reàlly address the subject matter. It feels like a made for TV movie. But ok, I'll admit it - Beah Richards and Spencer Tracy's parts were my favorite parts. Tracy's speech at the end comes off as a bit pontificating, but I still liked it. Not a great film, but enjoyable and satisfying. Roger Ebert wrote a good review if you want to look.
