Hudson Hawk

Critics Consensus

Hudson Hawk's kitchen-sink approach to its blend of action and slapstick results in a surreal, baffling misfire.

Movie Info

Thief extraordinaire Hudson Hawk (Bruce Willis) has just been released from prison and all he wants is a nice cappuccino. However, before he can savor his favorite beverage, the highly eccentric and wealthy Darwin Mayflower (Richard E. Grant) and his equally odd wife, Minerva (Sandra Bernhard), rope Hawk into an ambitious series of heists. Soon Hawk is stealing no less than major works by Leonardo Da Vinci, priceless pieces that the Mayflowers plan to use in an exceedingly nefarious way.

I have been waiting for this film to catch on as the guilty cult film it is. This is a crazy film from beginning to end, MacDowell interprets a dolphin here, come on people. Bruce Willis is really trying to be charming, something he refuses to do now. The villains are over the top crazy and fun, something Hollywood ignores these days. I loved this film growing up, it wasn't until I discovered quality that I discovered Hudson Hawk was actually very bad. Time has been kind to this film and I think over the next twenty years it will gain further traction as a film that was terrible but was actually quite fun at the same time. Bruce Willis is a fun actor, not a great one but he was quite possible the Humphrey Bogart of the 80s and 90s era, a huge compliment but if the glove fits. The fan has its fans and watching it last night, I still like it even though it is insane. Other films have lived on through a core audience and I feel this film will linger for a little longer yet. 10/10/2018.

An outrageously entertaining and incredibly silly adventure filled with big laughs, action and charm. A wonderfully enjoyable and inventive comedy that you cant resist. Bruce Willis is fantastic, he is a real blast of humor, style, charm and great talent that he just had to show off in this film, especially in his scenes with Andi MacDowell and Danny Aiello. This movie is sheer comic gold that I don't think has been seen since the days of Pete Selllars.

A film that's so bad it's awful, Hudson Hawk lives up to every bit of its infamous reputation. The story is terrible from start to finish, and is convoluted beyond comprehension. There's not a decent performance from the cast, and the comedy is abysmal; as not one joke lands. Hudson Hawk tries to be an action film spoof, but it's completely incompetent. Given what an atrocity this film is, it's hard to believe that Bruce Willis's career survived it.

I can understand why people would think that this movie is a bit tacky or cheesy but I actually enjoyed it quite a bunch. I really love those action movies from the 80's and the 90's and this somehow brings me back to that time. One thing is for sure and it is that this movie is definitely not one of Bruce Willis' best movies. The action scenes were quite funny in a witty way, I just can't believe that I haven't seen this movie before. It is always a blast (for me) to watch Bruce Willis movies.
