Critics Consensus

It isn't quite the breath of fresh air that Iron Man was, but this sequel comes close with solid performances and an action-packed plot.

If there were any new ideas, I failed to spot them, as did my bone marrow, which slept through most of it anyhow. Go to Full Review

I don't think the story was nearly as strong as that of The Dark Knight, but it sure was entertaining and surprisingly funny... and sets up The Avengers quite nicely. Go to Full Review

As for the actual grand finale, Downey Jr. and Cheadle seem like they're already network gaming the PS3 release instead of facing any actual threat, and Rourke goes out like a chump. Go to Full Review

This corridor fight sequence perfectly encapsulates the character's lethal efficiency, and adds a touch of flair to an already fantastic scene... Go to Full Review

The most extraordinary aspect of Iron Man 2 is how it brings together the film’s seemingly unending string of subplots, tightly confined inside a mere 2-hour runtime, and makes the process feel effortless. Go to Full Review

While it's not chapter-and-verse based on any comic story and takes a lot of liberties, "Iron Man 2" is an undeniably fun piece of comic and summer entertainment. Go to Full Review

Ray C 2d (Road to Doomsday pt. 3) Iron Man 2 will always hold a special place in my heart, as it was the first Marvel movie I ever watched years ago. I still think it holds up on rewatch. That being said, it’s definitely a drop in quality compared to the original Iron Man. The main problem is that it feels overstuffed. Despite being a bit shorter than the first movie, it easily has three times the subplots. We’re dealing with Tony’s conflict with the government, Whiplash, Justin Hammer, setting up the Avengers, and more all in one film. I still find it enjoyable, though. Downey is obviously the highlight, and there are some solid action scenes here. Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer is phenomenal and I wish we got to see more of him. The finale with Whiplash, however, was underwhelming. The stuff with Rhodey and the drones beforehand works well, but the actual final battle feels like a letdown. All in all, it’s a solid sequel, but there are some noticeable issues with the script. ¡Buen trabajo!
