HIV is a growing problem for South Africa, but one the government refuses to acknowledge. South African president Thabo Mbeki denies the connection between HIV and AIDS, and hospitals do not distribute medication to patients infected with HIV. Zackie Achmat, who leads an HIV advocacy group and is HIV-positive himself, campaigns for the wide availability of anti-retroviral drugs. In protest, he refuses to take medication until the government changes its policies on HIV.
