Movie Info

Director Tony Buba returns to Braddock, Pennsylvania in this documentary of a dying steel-mill town. With offbeat humor and journalistic flair, he interviews striking steel workers -- who blast their bosses for closing the mill -- and a number-running schemer who claims to have made Buba's career. Clips from his previous films are effectively inserted, and Buba frequently recalls his own life experiences to illustrate the changes in his former hometown.~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Audience Reviews for Lightning Over Braddock: A Rustbowl Fantasy

Tony Buba makes documentary films about his hometown of Braddock, Pa which is not that far from Pittsburgh. As he has become better known around town and noticed by filmmakers like Werner Herzog, he takes the time to contemplate his own future while also charting the progress of the local workers movement in his 1988 film "Lightning over Braddock: A Rustbowl Fantasy".(In nearby Homestad in the present day, industry has been replaced by a shopping center with lower paying jobs.) He wonders if it is time to move on, leaving behind some of the local characters who have been taking over his work, while giving examples of films he could be making in Hollywood. What he definitely won't do is pay $15,000 for the rights to Jumpin' Jack Flash, so the audience will just have to sing along.
