Lion of the Desert (Omar Mukhtar) Reviews

Between 2.5 and 3 stars. The movie is so-so, but it is original to talk about a conflict very few have spoken, and the great actings from Anthony Quinn and Oliver Reed have a weigh in the balance.

It is a must see. Though a box office failure it reports a functional accpunt of the resistance in Libya. Quadaffi did little good in his life ,but funding this epic of a regional hero was an apex of Quadaffi's existence. The west does little to recognize the resistence in North Africa pre WWII and during the war. Excellent film. Historical signifigance.

I hadn't realised how brutal and muderous the Italians were in those days, just as bad as the Nazis. I'm half Italian and this was not there finest hour.

This is a cool war movie that reminds me of March or Die, The Wind and the Lion, or the man who would be king. also if you like this check out Zulu and Zulu Dawn

Lion of the Desert possesses several problems that generally prove to be staples of historical epics (thinly-drawn characters, overwhelmingly bloated length, well-trod narrative dynamic focusing on a rebellion and an evil empire), and makes several ethical missteps by casting white actors to play Libyan historical icons. That being said, there are poignant moments, such as the intercutting of actual footage of Libyan concentration camps and the several excellently staged battle sequences. Flawed as it may be (there's no excuse for its nearly four hour running time), Lion of the Desert still effectively deconstructs the effects of Italian fascism and powerfully condemns western imperialism; these are enough to make it a success.

One of the great war/biography movies of our time. Perfect authentic picture with detailed weapons, equipment and military/local costumes of early 20th century. Perfect film/sound editing and great special effects with thousands of stunts at war scenes. Emotional Music by Maurice Jarre enriches the dramatic scenes of people's sufferings during war. Stunning performance by Anthony Quinn, Oliver Reed, Irene Papas, Raf Vallone, Rod Steiger, John Gielgud, Gastone Moschin, Stefano Patrizi, Adolfo Lastretti, Sky du Mont and the great courageous youth characters of Rodolfo Bigotti and Eleonora Stathopoulou.

Lion of the Desert isn't Lawrence of Arabia, but it's a very strong, reliable, beautifully crafted, precisely acted, and often intoxicating story of man, war, and the conflict between barbaric imperialism and spiritually based nationalism. Inside is a classic tale of rebellion, but the film draws its focus towards the men who would lead each side, culminating in a fabulous sequence between stars Anthony Quinn and Oliver Reed. It's a film that's certainly not a significant presence on the broad movie watching public's radar, but it's a film deserving of a wider audience and greater admiration.

85% This film is made on a grand scale to make it a true epic. Omar Mukthtar's few months of life before his death in the battle is shown in this film. He is a Libyan hero who fights the Italian invasion with his army. He makes the heavily armed Italians flee with his brain and power. He like all men are cheated and towards the end the viewer recognizes with grief that Omar will be slain.
