No one fights to preserve a multiplex, but some people will risk everything to save a marquee. Through booms and busts, Delft Theatres Inc. -- and its innovative gem, The Nordic -- endured in Marquette Michigan for almost 100 years, even as the world changed endlessly around them. Local kid Bernie Rosendahl's modern crusade to restore the historic arthouse to its former glory leads filmmakers to discover a hidden cinema empire in the Upper Peninsula. Portraying the fascinating history of motion pictures through one iconic screen -- and featuring dozens of Michigan locations and characters -- "Marqueetown" is a true story of chasing your dreams, redefining failure and success, and reembracing the enduring magic of cinema.

Tina G @RT84388868 09/24/2024 I was thoroughly delighted by this inspiring documentary. The creativity in telling the story of one man's obsession with saving a beloved theater made me cry, cheer, and reaffirm my belief in the tenacity of the human spirit. Well done!!! See more Carlyle S @RT75912405 04/20/2024 These talented first-time filmmakers take a subject that could be of only regional or specialized interest (the preservation and revitalization of two movie theatres in Marquette, Michigan) and through insightful interviews, thorough and revealing research, and hilarious historical re-enactments, create a broadly entertaining triumph that celebrates one man's relentless determination and revels in the magic of cinema and, yes, the underappreciated yet integral facet of every movie theatre, the marquee. You'll cry, smile and laugh (and laugh and laugh). A must see! See more Ben W @RT91139665 04/19/2024 This was a beautiful exploration of nostalgia, community, and how a dream can evolve as time passes. See more Beth M @RT53789056 04/12/2024 If you love cinema and have memories of going to a special movie theater growing up - especially the single-screen independent theaters that were the heart of so many downtowns across America - "Marqueetown" is for you. It's a humorous, heartfelt, inspiring story about one man's quest to save the beloved historic movie theater of his hometown. You don't have to know the Nordic or Marquette to recognize your own art house or local movie palace in this story and feel moved by Bernie's passion for these beautiful spaces. The movie celebrates the magic of movies (love the clever use of cinema callbacks like war reels, coming attraction trailers, and intermission songs to add humor and help tell the story) and reminds us of the value of these historic movie theaters to our communities. So many of them are closing down and disappearing, and "Marqueetown" is a love letter that reminds us why they're worth fighting for and protecting for future generations. See more gregory g @RT77479496 04/11/2024 Saw this great movie at Wealthy Street Theater in Grand Rapids MI last night. It's a wonderful movie about two beautiful old theaters in Marquette MI and the history, architecture and people who ran the theaters over the years. Along with the story of the young man who fell in love with the Nordic Theater and attempted to bring it back. Great cinematography and story telling that will appeal to those who appreciate old style movie theaters with the big lit up marquees. Greg Garner See more David V @RT11594956 04/10/2024 Fun and engaging documentary with an inventive, irreverent approach to delivering its exposition/historical context through comic "old timey" dramatizations.
