Audience Reviews for Patlabor 2

One of the best anime's out there. It challenges the direction that the show is capable of reaching, going more for a dramatic position rather than comedic. Animation is beautiful and the story is more intense in its subject matter (terrorism and civil war) and really reaches into philosophical territory. Highly recommended.

Patlabor 2 comes with all the expected Oshii bells and whistles, by which I mean there are no bells or whistles, and should satisfy fans just fine. Others will wonder why this giant robot anime movie waits until the last fifteen minutes of its 115-minute runtime to bring the robots out to play. Pretty good stuff and very representative of Oshii's restraint and intelligence.

For genre fans, this is probably essential viewing, but despite the high quality animation and interesting perspective on the nature of Japan's status in the world post WWII, the story is too complex and convoluted to resonate beyond the converted.
