What to know

critics consensus

Much like the worst arcade games from the era that inspired it, Pixels has little replay value and is hardly worth a quarter. Read critic reviews

Movie Info

When aliens intercept video feeds of classic arcade games and misinterpret them as a declaration of war, they attack Earth, using the games as models. Knowing that he must employ a similar strategy, President Will Cooper (Kevin James) recruits his childhood pal, former video-game champ and home-theater installer Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), to lead a team of old-school arcade players and a military specialist (Michelle Monaghan) in an all-out battle to save the planet.

If you thought that Adam Sandler's career had hit the basement before, you haven't seen Pixels yet. This has a premise that would likely be amusing if it was an animated short but that is it. As a feature film, this is total garbage. The funniest part was the part when... Or that one where.... Yeah, I really couldn't tell you. This movie sucked. A lot.

No one would be denying that Adam Sandler has past his prime - and then some. The man continues to churn out typecast cookie cutter comedies without much variation in theme or humour, despite the dropping attendance and box-office revenue. Knowing that, Pixels is still far from Sandler at his prime, but there is a smidgen of fun to be had here. The reverence for old-school video games played out as an alien invasion film is amusing; the jokes may not be mined for all they are worth, and many are relegated right into Sandler's cliché wheelhouse, but a lean running time and the "play it safe" for the kids attitude keeps things rolling quite nicely. Some thrifty but nifty effects just add charm to a film that quite rightly shouldn't have any, but wins out by the sheer luck of it.

For those who really want to enjoy the movie, you can do it two ways. Either watch the short or fast-forward every bad and cheesy Adam Sandler scene you see, then watch that video game moment, then fast-forward again for another bad and cheesy Adam Sandler scene, and repeat until the end of the movie. This should've been a better movie if Adam Sandler and friends weren't in it.
