Critics Consensus

Ridley Scott's revisionist take on this oft-told tale offers some fine acting and a few gripping action sequences, but it's missing the thrill of adventure that made Robin Hood a legend in the first place.

Scott decided, I think, to get away from the whole campy thing in tights business and wanted to make this 'real'. So there is sweat and dirt and rats at the cheese and even bad teeth, which is fair enough, but it is also joyless. Go to Full Review

We never even get to see Robin steal from the rich and give to the poor. That's because the film is a prequel in search of a sequel. With any luck, we won't get one. Go to Full Review

Its $200-million budget is on the screen. This is a big-scale ambitious period epic in the 60s grand tradition. It seeks to retell a well-worn tale, to put old wine in a shiny new bottle. Go to Full Review

Robin Hood grasps the political and emotional climate of the legend, adding dimensions to the age-old tale that seems increasingly stale with each new interpretation. Go to Full Review

Jonathan R @RT40302517 1d Great acting, directing, story, and screenplay make for a great movie, and this has it. It is a realistic, historically rich, and politically inspiring story. This is much more grounded than most Robin Hood takes, with intriguing context, but there is nothing confusing about the plot, and the virtues are clear and highly satisfying. I can’t imagine any fans of Gladiator not enjoying this. It is truly astonishing to me why this movie has such a low score from critics. I’d rate it nearly as highly as Gladiator and put it up there as one of the best historical fiction movies ever made. See more Zach R. @ZARman 3d Going for too many plot directions at once. See more Christopher R. @Chrislo Feb 12 This movie was awful in so many ways. Took itself way too seriously. The score was completely incongruous. Horrible writing, terrible acting, even considering the great cast. But…it was beautiful and I couldn’t turn it off. I liked the take on the story. Generous 3 stars. See more Fox J @foxxp84 Feb 1 Fenomenal película, cuando Hollywood tenia huevos. Nada de CGI barato y fenomenales actuaciones. Una pena que nunca hicieran una segunda parte. Mis respetos a esta peli, denle una oportunidad! See more Robert V @RT47656870 Jan 23 Overlong and convoluted plot that has no relation to the traditional legend and just uses the same character names in an ahistorical medieval setting. Numerous plot holes and inexplicable decisions. See more Leo O @LeoObermyer Jan 6 Enjoyed this move and often re-watch it. Under-appreciated in it's day but holds the test of time!
