Species Reviews

I watched a "edited for content" version of Species, which sort of defeats the point... Then again, I don't find Natasha Henstridge all that attractive, so I don't feel I missed too much. (I know, she is classically beautiful and is clearly in good shape, but I find her looks plain.) Species has an interesting and original premise for a monster movie. The special effects were good and creepy. I liked how the movie toyed with the audience's emotions, making you sympathize with the girl at first, before revealing she's a monster. Somehow, though, the movie is less than the sum of its parts. It feels like an amateur exploitation film with A-list actors and great horror effects.

It has naive moments, like running offroad by a car down a hill and - what a coincidence! - centering the only electric cabin around with subsequent explosion... but acting isn't bad, and plot fits the classical simple scheme by "chase the prey" movies. Giger didn't reach Alien greatness, anyway monster is baroque enough. Didn't see any evidence of misoginysm.

Classic 90s horror-scifi. Great cast to boot. Very unusual to have F. Whitaker, B. Kingsley and M. Madsen (and A. Molina) in the same room, for this kinda movie.

What the flip? I thought this was going to be like basic instinct. This is kinda what I expected a bad movie kinda. But it has such a wonderful cast and they messed it up. The beginning was alright but then it soon went all down hill. It's what every 90s teenager wanted to watch and it doesn't stand the test of time. Even back then I bet it's still a bad movie but for a teenager this would be mind blowing. Anyway this is another bad alien movie but has good visuals. And I don't mean cgi.

Good watch, would watch again, and can recommend. This was a hit movie at the time, and other than the Xenos design, I'd say it is still a pretty good movie. The "anti-Jaws" approach of showing the monster off is really cool as the premise is largely how detailed and dangerous the xenos is, but the approach removes a lot of the suspense in the hunting and subterfuge, almost humanizing her as "hunted by the evil government entity". While it would be a much different, and arguably better, movie to do something more like "The Thing", that she only has one human mask sorts of outs her, making it more like a spy movie, and I think they did really well with that in mind. It just lacks the level of nuance and hidden information that spy and thriller movies tend to have. It's much closer to "Aliens" than "Alien".

An obvious attempt to cash in on the popularity of the alien franchise, interesting monster design given that Geiger was also involved in this project. The rest of the movie is pretty bad though.

This movie sucks. I mean, laughably bad. Poor Ben Kingsley. How'd he get wrangled into this mess? He doesn't try, even his American accent is horrible. Usually, I'd be mad about a professional not giving their all, but, in this case, I can't blame him. This script is horrible. I saw another commenter on here say that the script plays like an unused soft-core porn film, and I'd say that's a pretty apt description. Except there's nothing tongue-in-cheek here, as they tried to play it all straight-faced.
