Blind bought this blu-ray due to the fact The Strangers is still one of the scariest films released in the last fifteen years and writer/director Bryan Bertino has made less than a handful of films in that time. The Dark and the Wicked is bare bones horror primed for viewers to impose their own meaning on, but it's difficult to derive much from this slow burn, jump scare, slow burn, jump scare <repeat> pattern Bertino has imposed without feeling like one is really reaching for it. The simple story of something evil taking over a rural farm family lasts only ninety-five minutes, but while the detail doesn't have to run rampant for the scares to be intense a few genuinely creepy moments early on are not enough to sustain what is ultimately too thin a premise and characters whose only point of intrigue is the fashion of their demise.

Full blown nihilism doesn't really work for horror films like this. Yes an unhappy ending can be acceptable payoff but if we don't also care about the character there is no suspense just a boring death march.

An indescribably bleak story of coming home far too late in rural Texas. Filmed in the director's own childhood homestead, the geography of familiar places is subverted into a labyrinth of creeping despair. What does the entity want? This is one of those stories where you feel suffocated by shadows. Do not watch depressed.

I was excited to check out Bryan Bertino's latest offering, "The Dark and the WIcked." His debut, "The Strangers," was an instant classic introducing masked home invaders in the most unsettling of ways. His followup, "The Monster," was well-crafted as an estranged mother and daughter get stranded in their car in the woods while being stalked by a monster. It was ultimately disappointing as there was nothing to connect the disparate creepy happenings to the story-line. Many movies try to tease the viewer with unreliable narrators, leaving them to ponder whether what is happening is supernatural or all in the characters head. "The Babadook," "Black Swan," and "The Lighthouse" are examples of movies that do this right. Unfortunately, this doesn't. It's clearly something supernatural haunting everybody, but beyond some disturbing and/or violent scenes (all of which are well done), the movie is just too ambiguous in a very frustrating way.
