Collectivism S @CollectivismSux 5d Shane Black’s The Nice Guys moves with a pace most modern comedies seem to have forgotten. Scenes start late, end early, and the movie never stalls. The hazy, sleazy 1970s Los Angeles backdrop gives everything a loose, lived-in feel that works perfectly with the tone. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling carry the whole thing. Crowe grounds the film while Gosling leans completely into Holland March as a panicked, incompetent wreck. The physical comedy alone carries entire stretches. The one thing that drags the movie down is Holly March. The script treats her like a moral mascot who can wander into criminal situations and lecture grown men without consequences. When the gunfight with John Boy erupts outside the house, the film finally creates real danger. Instead the movie protects Holly and her friend Jessica. Honestly, both of those precocious little shits getting clipped by stray gunfire would have delivered the catharsis the scene clearly sets up but never earns. The humor feels like it’s aiming for that Marvel-style rhythm, but instead of sharp or clever exchanges, we get what amounts to failed Fast, dry, self-aware dialogue. The pacing of the conversations is off, the reactions don’t land, and the subject matter rarely feels interesting or funny. The film might have worked better if much of Gosling and Crowe’s "comedic" banter had been trimmed down. Instead, we’re stuck with dialogue that feels artificial trying for Gilmore Girls in its rapid-fire delivery, but with no wit. Gosling’s daughter is written as the typical Hollywood, disrespectful/witty/adult-in-a-child’s-body cliché — always in the right place at the right time, magically smarter than the grown men around her but suddenly incompetent when tension is required, and wrapped in thick plot armor. The runtime feels excessive for a buddy-detective story, and the mystery becomes predictable. See more Jithin K @Jithin Jan 30 I had no idea Ryan Gosling can be this funny. Him, Russel Crowe and the little girl made a great team. The fun dialogues and the chemistry between the actors made this a very entertaining watch. The plot was good enough for what it was but it felt like they deliberately kind of dumbed it down and glossed over stuff so it would be safe. Even the R rating is there on the safer side by showing stuff that would seem edgy but not too much that would scare some audience. It's really good despite that and they should make a sequel because this has the potential to give better movies. See more Doitwoods S @Doitdro Jan 24 I watched the movie it was nice but pointless 💀the little girl is like a fly tht travels with them .. 2hrs long and the whole point was trashed because at the end it didn’t matter they didn’t win and Detroit still got away .. the little girl prolonged the simplest tasks by not staying in her place or opening her mouth, if your going to be hardheaded then atleast speak tf up like 😭😭the simplest story made 2hrs long with no real end result is outrageous if you ask me but hey that’s movies for you See more Jozef P. @Jozef_Vodkavich Jan 14 It's pretty funny, the dynamics of the two main characters is brilliant. I love the attention to detail with the setting in the 1970's groove. Unfortunately the ending for me wasn't so satisfying, not a happy ending. Also, a lot of nudity, not really my cup of tea.
