Long misunderstood because of misrepresentations dating back to Robert Flaherty's largely staged 1922 ethnographic film, "Nanook of the North," the Inuit and Yupik peoples have rarely told their own stories. In "Drums of Winter," the Yupik share the true nature of their way of life and demonstrate a rich tradition of dance that has developed in relative isolation, surviving for many centuries, even in the extreme climates of Alaska and the easternmost parts of Russia.
