The dynamic duo of Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe are the star attractions in the comedy-drama "A Young Doctor's Notebook." The limited series, based on a collection of short stories by Russian playwright Mikhail Bulgakov, recounts his semibiographical experiences as a young physician in a small village at the dawn of the Russian Revolution. Hamm plays the man 17 years on, who has a series of comic exchanges with his younger self -- portrayed by Radcliffe -- mocking his inexperience and guiding him through early struggles.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A Young Doctor's Notebook is a superlative literary adaptation that confidently drills down on the darkly comical trauma of failure, with Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe gamely performing two sides of the same incompetent coin.

It doesn't just blur the line between comedy and tragedy. It wisely understands that, in Russia, there's not much difference between the two. Go to Full Review

For "Notebook," Hamm and Radcliffe had to be willing to be goofy, belligerent, ambitious and detached, sometimes all in the same scene, and this production wouldn't work without their game attitudes. Go to Full Review

It may be set against a snowbound Soviet backdrop, but this is essentially another comedy about an incompetent medic. Go to Full Review

Not for the squeamish, Notebook is worth bookmarking if you've an adventurous streak. Go to Full Review

Believe it or not, that stomach-turning gore is part of this four-part gem's charm. "A Young Doctor's Notebook" gets the balance between tragedy and comedy just right. Go to Full Review
