What to Know

Critics Consensus

By eschewing traditional hagiography to instead delve deep into Billy Joel's tumultuous life with disarming candor, And So It Goes weaves a touching story fit for one of the Piano Man's ballads.

...this comprehensive documentary is a reminder that anyone with such a gargantuan career – over 150 million albums sold, a residency at Madison Square Garden that lasted 10 years – has an intriguing psychological set-up. Go to Full Review

And So It Goes is a disappointingly underwhelming music documentary. Clocking in at nearly five hours, it’s both indefensibly long and exasperatingly short on formal inventiveness. Go to Full Review

Like its subject, it isn’t about surfaces. Both Joel and the makers of “And So It Goes” understand that when you look beyond the surface, you can glimpse the soul. Go to Full Review

And So It Goes’ real strength though, apart from Joel’s fascinating stories about discovering his family’s European past and meeting supermodel Christie Brinkley are the detailed genesis of his plethora of hits that spanned two decades. Go to Full Review

Much of And So It Goes is like ambient telly, with yet another album breakdown washing over you. Still, mega-fans will obviously lap it up and you’ll undoubtedly be reaching for that battered copy of ‘The Stranger’ when the credits (eventually) roll. Go to Full Review

What is so fascinating about the first part of this documentary series is the fact that you get not just those songs, but you get the stories behind them. Go to Full Review

Angus S @AngusSantander Sep 7, 2026 A well made chronology of a rock icon who my generation, myself included, held to much deserved high esteem. It could have been a 5 star production, except, like so many in the entertainment industry, Joel simply could not resist the compulsive urge to "go there" during part 2, when he cites a turning point of his life, parroting the debunked left wing media LIE, of Donald Trump's post-Charlottesville statement "fine people on both sides", though Trump was clearly NOT referring to agitators. The Trump reference then segues predictably into (You guessed it) Joel's reference to Hitler's Nazi Germany to shamelessly and as subtly as a sledge hammer, tie the two leaders together. He also cites (paraphrasing) tumultuous times during Ronald Reagan's term. (Apparently America was perfect during Carter, Obama and Biden administrations). While not as vicious and openly crass as Bruce Springsteen, Joel manages to taint an otherwise revealing and heartwarming look into his life and times. See more Jon W @JSWolf Aug 19, 2026 Excellent. This is about the life of Billy Joel. While it's 4 hours 52 minutes, it doesn't feel so long. It tells of Billy Joel and his life and his music and how he came to write the songs. It's a must see. See more Kevin P @RT55971421 Jul 20, 2026 A fascinating documentary about the amazing life of Billy Joel and how his life shaped his talented music. I love how much time the documentary spends on do many classic Billy Joel songs and explains the content of how and why Billy Joel wrote those songs and the impact they had on his career. It's a little long in some places, but it's a captivating watch and very satisfying for longtime Billy Joel fans. See more Lisa D @FilmmakerLD May 4, 2026 I was blown away—though not surprised—by how good this documentary is in the hands of Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin. As any musician will tell you, Billy Joel’s musicianship and storytelling genius are undeniable. At this point, criticism of him as an artist feels almost beside the point. As a live performer though, I mostly knew him as the man at the piano at MSG. Seeing his younger self—dynamic, funny, physically agile, and electric on stage—gave me a whole new understanding of how he rose to superstardom after The Stranger. I was especially moved by Christie Brinkley and Elizabeth Weber, both so instrumental in different ways to his life and career, as well as his daughter Alexa Ray Joel. It was refreshing to see the women in his world truly given a voice. What surprised me most was the emotional depth—the patterns, the self-sabotage, that haunting idea: "Things are going well. Let me see if I can screw this up somehow." Far deeper than most artist documentaries. A must-see. See more Liz L @RT31094136 Jan 5, 2026 I wasn’t a Billy Joel fan and now I am! It’s a must see. So great to know the stories behind the songs. See more Jesse B @RT00070693 Oct 19, 2025 As a massive Billy Joel fan who has read the biography and knows random details. This is absolutely without a doubt the best way to get information on Billy Joel’s career. This should be the standard for musicians not lackluster biopics which fabricate material.
