Brimstone: Season 1 (1998 - 1999)

Season 1
Brimstone

Critics Consensus

Unrelentingly glum, Brimstone sinfully squanders the pulpy potential of its devilishly clever premise with a dour tone and rote procedural formula.

Viewers may feel they've been sent to purgatory.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Horton is effective as a tortured soul with a wry sense of humor. Glover is a hoot as a devil who pops in to deliver sarcastic and caustic quips, creating one of those supporting characters whom you miss when he's not on the screen.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Oh, brother, is it ever not a comedy. Brimstone is dark, and earnest, and a bit too smitten with its own ornate premise.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Beautifully shot and directed by the inventive Felix Enriquez Alcala, the premiere episode is nevertheless excessively gloom-and-doomy.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

If the premise sounds a tad lame, Horton flashes enough hangdog expressions and dispenses sufficient soulful wisdom to make viewers care about his bizarre predicament.

It's icky and boring at once.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Interesting writing and some good performances.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Most of tonight's pilot is devoted to explaining the premise, which makes it hell to watch at times.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

There's considerable talent in Brimstone... But the pilot has big problems, the main one being a weak and confusing script that might take the somewhat complicated premise beyond the grasp of many viewers.

Jun 18, 2019 | Rating: 2.5/4 | Full Review…

The premise of this new series would not seem to promise a barrel of laughs... Surprisingly, though, the drama works best when it chooses not to take itself seriously.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Brimstone had a solid-gold premise, brilliantly executed, and huge potential to move in any number of interesting directions. It was simply too good to fail. But, somehow, it failed anyway.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

No matter how layered the producers try to make Brimstone, it's still a chase show about catching the bad guy of the week.

This was a great series, it should have ran for at least three seasons. Peter Horton and John Glover where a perfect combination for their roles.
