Chozen: Season 1 Reviews

January 22, 2014
For a show with such an in-your-face conceit... Chozen is surprisingly, endearingly tender.

Chozen is so full of shocking bad taste that one starts to worry about the mental health of the people who wrote it, and then about the safety of the people near them.

Even if you could argue that the jokes on Chozen are impeccable (which they aren't), there would still be plenty of people who would find them far from funny.

If you even suspect you won't hate it, it's worth a look.

"In A Pickle" focuses on what Chozen does best, focusing on Chozen's rap career and minimizing the amount of characters that need stories.

Chozen will get more compelling once it focuses on that feud over loutish buffoonery and references to prison sex-which aren't that funny even the first five times they're made.

Chozen is an unattractive, lazy slob and while those characteristics can be comedy fodder, viewers will require a high tolerance for them if they are to keep watching.

None of this will come as a surprise to fans of Archer, the profane secret-agent spoof that crosses just about any line you care to draw concerning sex, drugs and violent imagery. But where Archer... stylishly crosses it, Chozen clumsily trips and falls.

Brain-dead male teens without any social skills or purpose in their lives might find this a highly entertaining diversion from their violent video games.

An oddball, sometimes clever and sometimes eyebrow-raising new animated comedy series.

Everything gets a lot cruder, an understandable decision that could downshift the show from unique to routine.

What could have been an ambitious comedy succumbs to plays for cheap laughs.

Chozen, the story of an ex-con rapper trying to make a grand comeback, tries its darnedest to be a suitable dance partner for the insane antics over at [Archer], but ultimately fails to bring the laughs.

Chozen is a truly bizarre blend of programming as it mixes prison and rap culture with Revenge of the Nerds.

Chozen wants credit for a provocative protagonist without doing the work of actually challenging any norms.

Satirizing rap seems slightly dated at this point, in the same way the gay jokes - including a musical fantasy featuring buff, oiled-up teddy bears - feel alternately outlandish and stale.

Chozen is intended to be both funny and very provocative. In the former, it succeeds infrequently and, in the latter, fails utterly - at least as far as I'm concerned.
