Pick a trope, and this series has it, whether it be interviews looking straight at camera after the lights turn on, cheesy reenactments, abysmal graphics … or how about a cop looking at a board of sticky notes with yarn connecting the dots? Stylistic choices aside - the actual storytelling feels tired. Everyone in the series recounts a string of consecutive factoids in highly edited monotone. Most of the story is told by those who hardly knew Tommy Thompson - a couple journalists, the marshals who tracked him down, a lawyer for the receivership that took over his companies. Bob Evans and Barry Shatz, his good friends and partners in the original expedition, aren’t even mentioned. It felt like the filmmakers never made an attempt to go deeper than “this man went crazy after he found gold”. A shame that such a rich and nuanced story has been reduced to this.
