In a divided Germany in 1983, naive 24-year-old East German soldier Martin Rauch is pulled from his benign post as a border guard and given a new assignment: undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service in West Germany. Hiding in plain sight as Moritz Stamm in the West German army, Rauch must gather NATO military secrets. As he veers between father figures, love interests, and East and West Germany, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harboring secrets, both political and personal. The coming-of-age story -- created by American journalist and author Anna Winger and her German husband, Joerg Winger -- is the first German-language drama to be aired on a major U.S. network.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Deutschland 86 is a rollicking spy caper that leverages its chic 1980s aesthetic to addictive effect -- proving both pleasurably suspenseful and empathetic to the point-of-view behind the Iron Curtain.

It's a dream, this reworking of recent history, in which everything is carefully off-kilter. More than anything it looks amazing, but the attention to detail is precise. Go to Full Review

Anna and Jörg Winger's 10-part sequel is as geopolitically fascinating as The Americans, the contemporaneous drama about two KGB agents subverting the US from within - and sartorially more compelling. Go to Full Review

There is so much happening in Deutschland 86, but the series' greatest coup is making each of these arcs personal. Go to Full Review

It's set in South Africa and, like a humourless escort agency, there's now a spy to suit every taste. Go to Full Review

Strong, nostalgic visuals, gallows humor characteristic of German television, and a fabulous 80's soundtrack provide for an entertaining watch. Go to Full Review

Deutschland 86 is more than just a thrilling spy drama. It is a nuanced geopolitical thriller that impressively walks the line between escapist entertainment and topical storytelling. It's also a hell of a good time. Go to Full Review

John T @Thrash 04/26/2023 A worthy second season, although not quite to the level of 83. It wasn't as believable as its predecessor and the story wasn't as intriguing. But overall, it was a well done and entertaining season. See more Ryan K @ryan_k1 02/22/2023 More disjointed than the first season but it comes together for a satisfying conclusion. The writing is just as good as the previous season. The soundtrack takes a step back as it tries to be more in step with the harder rock of the middle 1980s. We follow the same characters who survived the first season and many of them have significantly more minor roles than the first season. Overall, I would recommend Deutschland 86 to fans of Deutschland 83. See more andrei d @RT74856639 07/30/2021 A little confused at the start but still thrilling See more 03/27/2021 '86 is a shell of what '83 was. It imports a more global geopolitical angle, and doing so it starts to paint the east as the evil empire that was always going to fail. It moves away from the series' roots of the thrill of a good spy story. For that, this season is watchable, but not nearly as enjoyable. Western media always falls into the claptrap that the eastern bloc was the most evil, worst society ever designed in the history of mankind, and the second season departs from the first season greatly on this. It lost its independent thrill in the process. See more 03/14/2021 Great second season of a great series See more m g @justm 12/24/2020 All 3 seasons are great cold war thrillers.
